I recently acquired this in a trade. I was told it is a 93-94 ST54 EX foto flame. A 54 RI but not an RI?
Can anybody give me info on this guitar. It is in really good condition.
Stock with the exception of a Seymour Duncan Lil 59 in the bridge. Original stock pup is in the case.
Has a Beefy V neck that transitions to a more mellow v toward the body. Big block trem bridge.
It sounds fantastic.
It plays very well and holds tune well. Heaviest Strat I have ever had too. I shall include pics.
Is it a keeper? Was this an expensive Strat? Worth any impressive amount of $$?
Somebody educate me please.

It appears to be pretty much as you've surmised. The "EX" indicates an export model, most of which were shipped to either Europe or the USA (the latter in limited numbers as the newly-formed FMIC began to once again build premium guitars in Corona). Judging from the exposed wood visible in the neck pocket, the body seems to be alder (most of the foto-flames were basswood) which likely accounts for the instrument's heft. The Fuji-Gen Strats are generally highly regarded and yours looks like a well-preserved specimen.

Hhhmmm...let's see...

First you said "It sounds fantastic." along with "It plays very well..." and then you ASK, "Is it a keeper?". At the risk of being totally blunt; why don't you tell us? 8)

Seriously dude...if someone here says "nah...that's just a cheap POS import", are you gonna think any less of how it sounds or plays all because someone on an internet forum doesn't like it? Think about it...

I will say that the Japanese made Fenders and Squiers do typically have a reputation for being VERY good instruments...I've own 2 of the mid 80's Squier E-series and both have been truly outstanding instruments (better than anything I've ever seen made in the US). As far as value goes, while I haven't done any research, I don't think the foto-flames hold their value as well as a "real" finish typically does...after all, it is essentially a "fake" finish. Not saying they don't look really nice, but as far as value goes, I don't think these fetch a really high price compared to other instruments. That said, the collectors market can certainly be a fickle thing to say the least, so ya never know.

Otherwise, I think it looks like a pretty decent instrument. If you still think it sounds fantastic and plays well, my advice would simply be to enjoy it for what it is.

Just my $.02 worth...

Beautiful guitar...

Is that Lil' 59 splittable? Not sure about the presence of a push-pull pot in the master volume knob to cut the inner coil from the humbucker. :|
