According to Sweetwater, it has "vintage style pickups"
I assume that means alnico?

While I'm looking for an answer to my own question, I happen to run into this statement about the laquer finish:

For the record, Fender tells us these guitars have polyester undercoats, followed by five coats of Seagrave L-4540 high-solids nitrocellulose lacquer for the colour and top coats. Sanded and buffed to that glossy shine over the beautifully contoured, two-piece alder body, these look superb.

Just thought that was interesting about the poly undercoat.

Good catch, this means you'll never get down to the bare wood.

Vintage Style pickups to me, just means the middle is not reverse wound.... So there is no hum cancelling. Not sure if there is more than just that.

I spent a bit of time playing this guitar and my first thought was to replace the pickups... My second thought was the frets are teeny-tiny.

So why did I drop $900 on a new guitar that I want to replace the frets and pickups?

Sadly, its going back. I so much wanted to love this guitar for its vintage mojo... But I realized vintage isn't necessarly desirable..... I like modern appointments....

So this Classic 60's Strat Lacquer has been sent back in exchange for a Fender FSR American Standard V-neck.

Even many of the vintage pre CBS Fenders used a poly based undercoat or sealer, look up Fullerplast, so this is nothing new.

I knew about it too. But the poly undercoat is clear... So if/when you were ablet to wear off the paint, you'll still get that relic look. It just won't be down to the bare wood unless the poly was thin enough...

Indeed so as it needs to seal the surface.

If the raw timber were hit with colour from the go there is a strong possibility it would bleed along the grain making it more difficult to get an even colour.

Nice Purchase

Ive got the 50's Model in Candy Red. Its an excellent guitar that id recommend to any player. The Radius for me took a little while to get used too, but other then that, its suburb. Id go as far as saying it stands up to any american standard I've ever tried, baring in mind there obvious differences in specs.

Good luck with it :)
