I have the same guitar 89 Stratplus pewter with rosewood board. Mine came from the factory with Schaller locking tuners, Schaller strap locks, Fender Lace sensors, Hipshot tremsetter, TBX tone control and Wilkerson roller nut. I noticed that my 5 way switch is a little stiffer than the ones on the new strats but it works fine. I can really dial in some nice tones through my DRRI.

I've wondered to myself if Gibson wished it had used a system similar to the roller nut instead of the Zero Fret.

Thanks for that tip.

I think the roller nut is a great idea... better transmission of vibrations. I think the zero fret will transfer more sound than a roller nut because it is more tightly coupled to the instrument.

Absotutely! - from the beginning, I have planned to get some detailed pics since I now have access to my sons Canon Rebel. I'm planning to also have pics during the tear down and setup process. Right now I'm waiting for some Fender rubber pickup tubing. The tubing in the guitar had been compressed to the max for 27 years. When I lowered the pickups they stayed compressed or deformed and the pickups are now loose. I should have some pics by Saturday. ... stay tuned!!!

For that reason, I prefer coil springs over the standard surgical tubing.

Getting Organized

Image

Ta-da

Image

I was joking about the film on the plastic. I nearly fainted when I found the plastic film on this 26 year old beauty.

Image

Sequencing the screws so they go back to their original homes.

Image

Not a John Cruz but still a beautiful neck by a notable builder.

Image

So NOT a 1989 as one would surmise from the serial number. This neck was built in March of 1990 so the guitar can't be any older than 26.

Image

Neck Poscket

Image

As is normally the case with vintage Strats, it appears that the color has darkened a tad over the years.

Image

I thought that the TBX tone control had been removed because the center position detent was MIA. After a few carefully aimed shots of DeoxIT, the detent returned... I had a hunch that might happen.

Image

Swimming pool route... pool party!

Image

Old, tired, bent and discolored pickup height tubing... appears to have been hand cut from a longer piece.

Swimming pool route.

Old, tired, disfigured pickup height tubing... appears to have been hand cut from a longer piece.

Image

Six levels of fret hand polishing... takes about two hours.

Image

Still soaking in my secret neck sauce.

Image

FINE

Image

FINE

Sorry about the mismatched picture descriptions but I'm sure you can sort it out.

Nice job!

You're fortunate that the protecto-film peeled away neatly from that trem cover -- more often than not they leave a gooey, gummy mess behind after so many years in situ.

Rawk on!

Right - as soon as I saw it I thought it might be a problem but good luck prevailed!
