Well no doubt... it is my lucky day. I just nabbed a 1989 Fender Stratocaster Plus pewter/rosewood in dead mint shape... a real closet queen. The only thing missing was the plastic on the pickguard and the back plate! At any rate, I tested the Sperzel tuning machines, Bi-flex truss rod, Micro-Tilt, saddle height and intonation screws and all work perfectly as expected.

The pots and 5-way pickup selector, on the other hand, are quite stiff as they have had little, if any use over the past 27 years! I'm concerned that they might break if I don't break them in properly. Do you think I should apply some CAIG DeoxIT electronic lube now, or wait until I've used the pots and selector for awhile? Or should I use something else? I know that old pots and switches in this condition can be touchy.

Thanks for your help... any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Clean and lube the mechanicals now.

Thanks!

You are referring to the machines and bridge components?

No he's not!
The electromechanical stuff doesn't improve with age.
Get it sprayed up with contact cleaner as soon as you can.

All components that operate by means of manual manipulation (ie: mechanical). That's your pots, the switch, tuners, the screws which periodically need to be loosened then tightened in order to perform certain adjustments and functions, and the contact points for the two-point trem. Many cleaners also provide moisture-free lubrication to ensure smooth operation. Some "nut sauce" would be a good idea for the slots in the nut and the retainers of the string tree as well.

Hey Arjay - Thanks for the advice. BTW - I have a Strat Plus... no nut slots or string trees...

I thought that might be the case but I wasn't certain. For a roller nut I recommend a microscopic pinch of powdered graphite, one for each string. Go lightly though, it's like Brylcreem......"A little dab will do ya."

Now that's a product I've not heard mentioned for a long, long time.
I used to have it inflicted upon me when I was a kid :D

LMAO!

I'm guessing that you might remember a product called "Ipana" too.

Now that's one that I don't remember - I could still have seen it, as my Dad had a Stateside posting back in '65/'67 and we all moved with him.
I had my 3rd birthday on the way over on The Queen Elizabeth, Cunard Line's flagship.
It was a rough old crossing - my birthday is the 12th of January, and the North Atlantic can be a bit rough during those Winter storms.

I'll let you guys in on a trade secret. Brylcream is really just 90 weight gear oil. You could use it to lube the nut.
