Well my partscasterjourney took a different turn. After I got outbid on a used Classic 50s in surf green I found a guitar that was listed on Reverb.com as a "60s Partcaster". Guy bought it from a pro musician in the Nashville area. I took the chance and bought it after examining the pics and doing some research with the Fender history. I will know for sure when I get it and can examine it better and check under the hood.

That's the tack I took when building this guitar...... It was originally a 1999 Classic Series '50s Strat in Surf Green. Bought on the cheap from Ebay for less than $365. In this instance I used both the body and neck since they had the desired specs. Arjay
This was a really great deal for you, Arjay. For $365 you got your specs and all you had to spend on top of that was for the refinishing.

Say someone was looking for a hardtail, vintage frets, 7.25 radius, truss rod on headstock, locking tuners, what would it cost going the partscaster route?

Cheers!

Hard to say with absolute certainty. I don't think Fender offers a vintage-spec neck with the truss-adjust at the headstock so you'd likely have to take the aftermarket route on that. As for a hardtail body, Fender makes a couple of different models but only in a very limited selection of colors. If you're cool with Inca Silver, Deep Violet, or 3TSB then the Robert Cray body would work. A different color would require an aftermarket body or re-finning the Cray. Plan appropriately before you start laying out any cash.

I am looking for something so specific its almost impossible to find it without spending major coin. I am looking for a surf green with a maple neck and 9.5 radius neck (or a thick vintage radius one) . I prefer the 50s vibe . Two of my strats are 59 RIs with 9.5 and 6105 frets with rosewood board. I like vintage specs for the most part. Unless I am willing to spend quite a bit on a custom shop( I already have a CS 59 reissue ) there arent alot of choices unless I am willing to go with a more modern strat.

So I am looking at a Mexi 50s classic and a Mexi 60s Classic Lacquer edition. I for sure would swap out the pickups and the trem block . I would possibly even swap out the neck if I found a nice one with a 9.5 and tall skinny frets. I looked at used and there arent alot of surf green ones out there.

I picked the Mexi Classic series because it has the best foundation for what I am looking for and they can be had for a good price (plus resale isnt a big deal either).

How many of you decided to go this route rather than settle for what is out there?

Also look out for a Highway 1 body too. Those are nitro finished and nearly priced at or below the MIM Lacquer bodies.

I just bought a Classic 60's Lacquer Strat and had a Classic 50's. Best sounding Stratocasters I've played. You may not need to upgrade a thing. When I tried them out at Guitar Center, the Classic Series Lacquer guitars had thicker necks than American Standards... Only thing to be mindful of is the fretboard radius. That might trip you up a bit.

I suggest using high quality aftermarket bodies and necks such as Warmoth. You'll get a custom spec'd guitar much cheaper than going through Fender Custom shop. Pick your neck shape, fretboard radius, fretwire, tuners, and finish. Much better option in my opinion...

Well I received my "partscaster" today and with the help of arjay was able to determine it is an utter and complete fake. Talked to Reverb.com and am able to get a full refund. Like the saying says "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is ... a fake. :(
