Recently played a 1989 American Standard Deluxe Strat with Lace Sensor pups and loved the sound. The covers were faded so I couldn't make out the type. For those Blues players who use Lace Sensors in their Strat, what flavor(s) do you have?

Thanks and Cheers!

Xhefri would be the one to ask on that subject. He knows them well in their multiple variations..

You might want to consider rewording your description of, "Bluesy." To a person who plays Blues, this can mean a lot of things. Do you mean, a "warmer" sound? That would be the "Blue" Lace Sensor, which according to one source, these pickups are similar to P90s in tone. Early Strat Deluxes had 2 silver and red (silver is the neck and middle). Later versions had Blue, Silver, and Red.

Personally, I like the 3 gold sensors of an '87 Strat Plus I owned and as well as my Clapton Strat.

Hi Pars, thanks for the feedback.

+1 about "Bluesy". In fact it can probably mean a lot of different things to any one person on a given day. Surprisingly Lace Sensor Gold, Silver, and Red pickups are not recommended for "Blues" by the manufacturer. The ones Lace Sensor does recommend for Blues are the Lace Sensor Light Blue, Blue, Emerald, and Purple

Not sure but I'm thinking the Lace Sensors I played on that 89 Strat were probably Gold or Red.

Cheers!

I'm pretty sure that short-lived American Standard Deluxe had an all gold Lace set - like the Strat Plus or the Clapton of that era.

Paris - the early Strat Plus Deluxes had 2 silvers and a blue in the bridge position; they moved the blue to the neck position and put in the red when they made the change. But let me qualify that by saying I never saw a Strat Plus Deluxe in person until after it went to the blue/silver/red set.

I have a Strat with Gold 50s that have a very mellow sound. If you're looking for heavily distorted rock type blues, I wouldn't necessary go with the Golds. I use that Strat when playing 50s era and old school soul ballads and for want of a better phrase "blues in the night." That is, very laid back soft blues tones. I've also used it for soft Jazz and vocal backup.

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies; they're really appreciated.

I'm a little confused about the various models and what I've come across on the Internet. Are these different names for the same model or different models altogether? Did (do) they all have Lace Sensor pickups? "Strat Plus" , "American Standard Deluxe", "American Deluxe Stratocaster Strat Plus", "Deluxe Stratocaster Plus".

Cheers!

BM,

The "Strat Plus" and "Strat Plus Deluxe" were the Lace Sensor models, as was the "Strat Ultra" and a 1-year model called the "American Standard Deluxe". The "Strat Plus Deluxe" is sometimes referred to as the "Deluxe Stratocaster Plus" - Fender wasn't always consistent with the name, but those refer to the same model.

The old "American Standard Deluxe" was an American Standard with the gold-logo Lace Sensors, but did not have the locking tuners, roller nut, or the tremsetter.

There is a current model called the "American Deluxe Strat Plus" - it is the one with those "personality cards" that change the wiring from standard to a "blender knob" or to a treble and bass roll-off. These come with the current N3 pickups.

Thanks for the clarification, John C.

Based on what I've learned on this forum I'm confident now that the Strat I played with Lace Sensors was an American Standard Deluex (1989) with Gold Lace Sensor pickups. Loved the sound which also peaked my interest to learn more about Lace Sensors.

Cheers!

This is a good topic. I am looking to replace the VN pups in my DPS Strat with Lace Sensors. I've played a Strat with Gold and I was really impressed but I am looking for something with a bit more gusto, Texas southern Rock/Blues accent to them.

Good that you brought this up and had it seconded by John C. Xhefri got himself into a nasty donnybrook a couple of months ago with a seller who insisted that the guitar in his hands was a Strat Plus. Xhefri had identified it as one of those short-run Deluxes. To make matters worse, someone at Fender supported a contention that Fender had let a run of Strat Pluses without the hardware.

Mine has an April '89 build date and is configured as such. The OP might have a look at the Actodyne website. The Lace Sensors have gone beyond red, silver, blue, and gold. There might be some hotter options of interest.

Thanks, Doc. I had checked out the Lace Sensor website and from what I could find, the single coil Lace Sensor pickups currently come in 8 flavours.

I consider the manufacturer's suggestions as a very broad starting point. Much more significant to me are the impressions and opinions of the guitarists who use these pups.

Cheers!

Point well made. However, I don't have any knowledge of any comments about pickups other than the Gold, Hot Gold, Red, Red Dually's, Silver, and Blue. You might have to rely more on output specs than word of mouth. I owned a '93 TelePlus which had a Red Dually at the bridge, and a Blue at the neck. The guitar was a stormer. Not your usual and customary country twanger Tele.
