When I pic the strings on my Strat, nothing comes out of the amps speaker but a real bad grinding noise. What could this be? I've tried three different cables, but the sound is relentless. Any help is appreciated.

Have you pulled the pickguard and inspected all the wiring under the hood? How about the output jack and trem claw -- all wires solidly connected? If nothing seems amiss, it sounds like your volume pot may have taken a dump.

Check output jack if cable and amp are ok

Have you tried a different amp and guitar combination to confirm the issue is with that guitar, not the amp?

When did the problem start?

If it is just that guitar, and the same problem occurs with all the pick ups in the same way, I agree with as others have posted - socket, volume pot or bad earth.

Definitely check to ensure your speaker is completely plugged into your amplifier......output problems should be worked from back to front imo...
Eliminate these to find your problem; the speaker, the amp, cable, effects and then the guitar.
It may prevent damaging components until you isolate the problem.

Well, the obvious answer to me is you need new brake pads. But hey, I'm no expert.

I concur. First thing is to try plugging the guitar into a different amp and trying plugging a different guitar into the suspect amp...find out WHERE the problem is first. While this should go without saying, make sure you're not using any fx pedals or anything...one guitar, one amp and one chord, until you figure out exactly where the problem is.

-IF- it's the guitar, check the wiring, starting with the output jack and particularly all grounds...especially check solder joints to make sure nothing came loose (cold solder joints happen).

If it's the amp on the other hand, unless you have some background with electronics, I would suggest EXTREME CAUTION...many guitar amps, particularly tube amps, can retain potentially LETHAL VOLTAGES, even when unplugged!!! Unless you know the proper method to discharge those power caps, leave the servicing to a qualified professional.

Good luck!
