The Super Switch does not give 7 pup combinations, only 5, the same number as a regular 5-way switch. The only way to get more than 5 combinations with a Super Switch is in combination with an additional switch, such as an S1 or push-pull switch.

Yes it does... But it is a complicated switch. The benefit is that 7 pup combinations is just one aspect of this switch. You can completely customize your own personal diagram, for in or out of phase and many more options.... You do have to think out of the box with this switch and it is not simple.

The title of the articles that you linked to: Introducing Fender’s 5-Way “Super Switch”, and Exploring Fender's 5-Way Super Switch.

This is a 5 position switch, that's 5 possible combinations, no more. What the super switch allows is more complex switching, for tone controls or series/parallel combinations, or other, but the fact remains, 5 positions as I've stated. You have nearly limitless possibilities of wiring schemes, but no matter which wiring schemes you choose for each position, you can only have 5 at one time, as there are only five positions. I have used the super switch and owned guitars with the super switch, and they are indeed very cool, but if you want more than 5 combinations at one time you must add an additional switch such as a push/push, push-pull, toggle, etc.

Hi
I've just seen your post and thinking about doing exactly the same to my fender strat deluxe ie swapping N3 to SSL 1 and 5 for exactly the same reason.

What did you do in the end ... and are you happy with result?

Did the S1 work out ok with a straight swap to ssl, and any noise issues?

Cheers

I know the OP began this thread some time ago and his project will have been completed. However, I thought I’d add my two bits of perspective.

Having played a ‘62 Strat through a Bandmaster in the mid 60s and now owning a 2012 Amn. Dlx, I agree that the N3s are not the same classic sound. Yet, for what they are and for recording purposes, it still took time for me to really like them. I do have a better appreciation for them now, and accept them for how they sound, and for what they are intended to be. Different. I actually like them and I know others with experience and collections of guitars that appreciate the N3s. That was a surprise I discovered after a few years of ownership.

From a straight in and out hookup, and should all things be equal to classic set up and tones, guitar, amplification, and pedals the N3s will be - different.

But, I did some A/B testing with both a modelling amp and with software. My results? Not always, but sometimes I could come close if not bang on to matching an original vintage sound. If you know what to listen to and how to reach that tone, there are options. It does not always work . . . but, never say never unless you go the distance or get lucky.

I loved the ‘62 and Bandmaster, but today’s gear has its own vibe IMHO. YMMV.

There’s merit for swapping out the pickups and wiring should that preferred. After all, the thought of hot rodding Strats has a history, and it’s one of the features of this well designed guitar. Some hot rods should never have been made though.
