I bought a 2015 American Standard HSS Shawbucker Strat at the end of May. I wanted a modern Strat with tones I didn't have and the Shawbucker definitely provides them. I like the balanced output between the PAF style, unpotted humbucker and the Fat 50s single coils and the dual 250k/500k pot lets each pickup or combination of pickups sound their best.

The reality didn't hit me until a week or two later that the age difference between my newest and oldest Strats is 50 years. A half a century. Really? Am I really getting that old? :) Yep, but it sure has been fun. Anyway, here are a couple of pics of both guitars...

Very nice.

I think if I had a 50 year old Strat I would have to assemble a brand new one out of all Fender parts to be as close to a replica as possible....just for the fun of it to see how close you could get.

Very nice! I've heard good things about the Shawbucker. I find most modern HBs to be too mid-rangy or muddy. I've heard that these pickups breath a bit better.

Nice '65 Strat. It's pretty cool that that they are both black.

It says a lot about Leo's original design, aside from the 2015 being a hotrod version(humbucker and extra fret)the strat is pretty much the same, timeless.

Some changes which occurred were the logo, lack of "skunk stripe", abalone inlay for the fret markers, rosewood finger board and pick guard. You'll notice that all of this is pretty much cosmetic.

If you look at a modern Strat, there are far more actual technical changes. From my perspective and what I've read, Leo Fender saw the Strat as platform which could and would be upgraded.

So, do they make them like they used to?

In the Stratocaster's 10-year production run by the Fender Electric Instrument Company, he never saw that need.

And I never did either.

And since Leo sold his company and departed, Fender has yet to develop and market another instrument as timeless a design as the original Stratocaster.

I agree Leo got it right the first time, no need to change the original design IMHO.

Estheticly, I agree, but it was during this period that Leo was working on the micro tilt neck adjustment. The pickguard material was changed because what Fender was using was flammable.

On the whole, Leo was forever tinkering with things to improve them. This has been written about in some detail in several books. I don't really believe that Leo saw the Stratocaster as a set in stone product.

I totally agree that Fender never made a better product than the Stratocaster. It is truly timeless.

(By the way, if I've misunderstood your responses, forgive me. I'm generally not one stur up touble or disrespect other members. I do however, love a healthy debate, and I have a great deal of respect for guys like Arjay.)

Leo didn't start that horseshit until some five years after selling his company. Frankly, it was a solution to a problem that didn't really exist. Then he foisted the entire concept upon FMIC who completely hosed the implementation of it which resulted in the oft-maligned "CBS era" guitars.
