If we rely on internet knowledge (and why-oh-why shouldn't we...), "there are 285 shades of visibly different red to the naked eye for a person without any colour blindness and 20/20 vision"

Fender ain't even close yet

I am surprised it is a s few as that but still wonder how many Fender colours are the same colour different name...But on the other hand why wouldn't you add a splash more yellow or blue or what ever and call it something different, and new, and worthy of purchase because it is different, and a limited run special issue.

I guess I'll do a ton of googling to see the colors.

Just curious... does anyone have a collection of red Strats?

On the discussion of red I was looking closely at the color of a 60th vintage strat and in poor light the dark edge looks black but in very bright sunlight it definitely has a red component where the brown burst is thinner over the amber.
Here are some since you asked
I have played all of them but don't own all of them.. :D
Bing cherry

aged cherry burst

tobacco burst more brown than red

red chrimson trans

quite a light sienna burst maybe more red than brown

OMG - they are beautiful.

They do appear to be different shade of red. Can you tell me the color of each?

Thanks for sharing.
Do you have any comments on the sonic comparison of each?
Love the big headstocks as well! :D

Thanks for the interest folks, your questions :-

1. All the covers are original except the one on the 66 gold hardware guitar. After buying this Strat, I found a mid 60's original cover on ebay, then gold plated / relic'd this myself (in the 60's all Fender gold plated hardware was simply plated over an original stock cover - that's one of the reasons why the gold wears so easily)

2. Despite all being slightly different, they are all Candy Apple Red. Most custom colours - especially if cellulose is used - are very sensitive to UV light, & will change colour over time quite dramatically if continually exposed to natural light. With 1st generation CAR Fenders two different base coats were used - silver ... then gold - & this also has an impact on how the "red" changes. I have a 64 Tele that is almost gold over much of the exposed body sections, but under the pick guard the original red is still vibrant. In my overall collection I can probably show you more than a dozen different colours that are all in fact Candy Apple Red.

3. The 65 is perhaps the best sounding / player to my tired ears, but only marginally so over the others (& it all depends on what sound you are looking for?) They can all be made twangy / smooth / bright / etc etc, that's what a good Strat can do, it's called versatility! Also, the 73 guitar is light in weight, & very close in sound to the others (albeit perhaps a bit brighter - the maple wood) It plays beautifully .... don't let anybody tell you that all 70's Fenders are of inferior quality to the pre-CBS guitars.

That's the beauty of CAR (and other candy colors). The base paint combining with the translucency of the top red layers gives different results, based on paints used, the "handwriting" of the painter - and of course chance.
Funny how, in this time of computer aided technology, there still are variations (=individuality), just check the difference between the US and MIM CAR bodies

And oh yea, your car collection is mighty nice.

interesting site-- popups notwithstanding--, just from my own perspective, never heard of a Gun Metal Red. the "Red Paisley" appears just to be the standard Pink Paisley. Some of the "colors" (without corresponding numbers--but initials instead) like the couple I just mentioned, just appear to be ..uh..."created".

just my nickel's worth.
cheers

Those colors with initials instead of numbers are Fender Japan color codes, like the GRB for Gunmetal Red Burst.
On the Red/Pink Paisley, I can't say if they're the same or not - I've never seen the Red one in real life, and I don't trust the pics on a computer screen. The Paisley pattern is different on the Red/pink pics (of the pop-up-hell page that shall not be named again, the link is on page one if someone needs it), so go figure.

Correct.

Fender's gold hardware was (and is) quadruple-plated......a base layer of copper, then nickel, followed by chrome, and finally the gold.

However, gold applied over chrome is significantly more durable than Gibson's practice of plating the gold straight to their standard nickel-plated hardware of the era. Which is why the hardware of vintage Fenders with original gold bling usually fared better than say an old Les Paul Custom or ES-355.

That's a very fine collection of CAR Strats you have there.

Rawk on!
