He's the reason I started playing guitar back in 1984 and I still love his playing. I love the blue Strat he's playing here.

http://www.jukebo.com/prince/music-clip,guitar-teaser,55uv0.html

I just noticed that the Strat he's playing has no middle pickup. I imagine it's custom made, but I'm curious as to why he wanted no middle pickup.

The combination looks the same as in the CS Yuri Shiskov all-gold Stratocaster which was sold to F1 driver Lewis Hamilton.
Here's a Russian article on the gold Strat(s), with probably the best pic of the gold guitar: GuitarsMagRus
BTW, would be nice to know what the article says, since the google translator only gets so far - "Kastomshopovsky master" etc.
(If I get the text right, he's still got another all-gold Strat...)

I'd guess that's an EMG (82?) in the bridge, but the rest (neck pup, two controls, wiring), and especially the "why" remain as much a mystery as the artist himself.

I thought exactly the same.

I am pleased to hear that Lewis Hamilton has found something to spend his millions on. Though it's not like him to get something crass and ostentatious  I guess you need something to redress your crass and ostentatious rating after the loss of a Shirtslinger.

Well my fave Prince clip is the one in which he plays with Tom Petty and others at the Rock Hall of Fame induction of George Harrison. The song is of course While My Guitar Gently Weeps and well worth watching if you have not seen it.
He plays a tele though :D

Had to look up both words in a dictionary... (Does it tell something about me that I know "Shirtslinger..?).

But no badmouthing against Lewis; the 100.000$ he paid went "to Prince's charity, The Harlem Children's Zone".

:-) Oh you name dropper. My son has raced (and beaten) Lewis's brother Nicolas. Really nice guy. That was also charity event and Nicolas was very generous at the post race auction as well.

I vaguely remember seeing some shots of Prince with a similar Strat that was either orange or fiesta red (hard to tell; it was a shot on a red-lit stage) a few years ago. I believe these are based on AVRI '57s, but I suppose they are probably CS-built and could be based on the '56 Time Machines, and those are EMGs in an H/S setup. Why H/S? I suppose Prince is more used to 2-pickup guitars from all those years with that Hohner Tele-style and those various "cloud" and "symbol" guitars.

I meant, I know who the word refers to, not that I'd know her personally (not to München the biblical sense...)

It tickles me that Tom Petty gives him a look as if he'd like to punch him in the mouth and I thought "I know exactly what you mean".

Daphne Blue, my favorite Strat color. Lifted from a '58 Cadillac.

Perhaps for the same reason Robbie Robertson rewired his Strats nearly 50 years ago. He found that the center pickup cramped his picking style. He move the middle pickup back to sit against the bridge pickup. Looks like a humbucker, but's not.

We had long thread and discussion about this many years ago.

Neck/bridge humbuckers on a Stratocaster are not new concept either. At least 30 years back when one player had his guitar so equipped. We had a thread on that also.

We are a very thread-worthy group. 8)

Doc
