Quite a while back I was checking out strats and teles.i played both an srv strat and Clapton strat.I found both necks very comfortable.More comfortable than my mim standard.Im in a position(finally) to start looking for a new guitar.both of these are not cheap guitars.what other models should I consider checking out before I pull the plug? Ive always wanted a sunburst strat but not a deal breaker.i don't have a preference for finger board wood.Im not hung up on signature guitars, just neck shapes/comfort.This will be a major investment for me and I've been saving for aloooooong time.

An Am Std with Fat 50s would be an excellent axe to consider.

Maybe like this one. :D

It sounds like it is the soft V neck which has grabbed your interest, this being on the EC and SRV.

The cheapest non signature model I have spotted with a soft V is the American Vintage 56. I hope this helps.

I don't disagree with the previous posters, all good suggestions.
But it might be a good idea to play the Jimmie Vaughan TexMex; soft V, available in sunburst, 9.5" radius and a lot cheaper than the
EC (play that one till you know if you like the active electronics),
SRV (the neck profile is called "thick oval" - and then there is the lefty trem...) ,
AmVint56 (radius 7.25" - yes or no?) or the
AmSTD (that's sorta the reference Stratocaster, but check if you prefer other neck profiles to the "modern C")

At least you'd get a good comparison, or maybe spend the money saved on a real nice real nice amp

Thanks guys,I will look into the models your suggesting..and yes,the srv has a fatter oval shape.I liked the unfinished"finish' on the back of the neck of the Clapton.Quite a nice feeling guitar overall but I don't really need the fancy electronics..

The latest American standards have satin finish on the back side of the neck, I would give those a chance.... Plus, you can have sunburst with both maple or rosewood board....

The Clapton Strat is a great guitar. The SRV Strat and Clapton Strats have remarkably very different necks. The Clapton Strat has the soft "V" shaped neck which many see as the ‘50s style neck, while the SRV Strat has a, as Fender calls it, "Early-'60s Oval Neck."

I own the Clapton Strat and the neck is pretty comfy. I've played the SRV Strat and it seems pretty chunky to me. I prefer a slimmer neck.

I've owned countless Strats, and each has a different shape and feel to them. My advice would be to play a bunch of guitars and see which one fits your taste in sound and playability. It's all very suggestive, really.

I recently purchased one of the new Dlx Strat Pluses (with the personnility cards). The necks are very conforable. My only complaint would be that I was not able to get the SSS model with a rosewood fingerboard. Fender doesn't make them like that. The SSH model can be purchased with a rosewood fingerboard. I may buy a different neck to replace it.

As to the Clapton and SRV Strats, I'll repeat what I posted earlier.

If you like a fat neck, try and find a '62 Hot Rod, it has a substantial neck, and is a really excellent guitar, in sound, looks, fit, finish and feel.

The MIM Jimmie Vaughan neck is the closest to the MIA Clapton in a soft V profile...

...at a vastly lower cost...I own both and love 'em. :)

For my money I'd choose a comfortable neck first...

...body color next...

...and not worry about the Pickups...

...because there is such a wide variety available to substitute...

...in short...my advice is to get a guitar with a neck you can live with a long time. 8)

IMO, you got some excellent advice all around.
It comes down to what you want and what you're willing to pay extra for, (signature guitar or upgrades).

If it were me, I'd probably go with the FSR model John Sims suggested, unless you want a Rosewood neck. I'm not sure but I think the picture is maybe wrong since the spec sheet says it comes w/ a Maple neck. But its $500-600 cheaper than the EC/SRV models and comes very well outfitted, imho. It may be that the spec sheet is wrong and the pictured rosewood is correct. I would confirm that, if you're set on a rosewood neck.

The EC and SRV axes are a bit pricey but both come w/ vintage cases, have different necks(shape & type) & pups and only the EC model offers a color choice.

The other Vaughn guitar is a MIM, not that that's a bad thing. But if you just want to upgrade/mod a guitar, well you have one you can do that with already.

That's exactly why mentioned the Jimmie Vaughan model; the OP has a chance to test this MIM model against the MIA models, feel/see/hear the differences and estimate those against one's own preferences.
(I've said this before, for me it ain't the country of origin, it's how a guitar feels, sounds, plays.)

BTW, "the other Vaughan" - I bet Stevie is laughing so hard right now that he'll fall from his cloud...

I believe it is a maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard. The fingerboard is also a compound radius so may, or may not, suit.

As all have said, it is very much a case of getting hold of the guitars and seeing how it feels to you.

I am sure the EC is a very nice guitar (it certainly should be considering the price). But it seems a great deal of money considering all of the possible alternatives unless you specifically want that particular guitar.
