Ha-ha! Formative experience: I stood about six feet in front of that actual guitar once, and it sure was getting a beating! For a long time I believed an electric guitar just had to be a wine red Les Paul, period. Then I got my hands on my first beginner's Strat, and life took a big step forwards...

Cheers

I appreciate all the good comments and feed back. I'm checking out all the websites mentioned. Like I said I need all the help I can get. I'm really pumped about this new world I've been introduced to.

Hi, guy. I'm feeling good, too. I got some late night practice in, like we were talking about. My wife says the neighbours were hammering at the wall, but I didn't hear them. Here's me at my practice rig in the attic:

That's the way it's done...

just learn basic chords, A, G, D, Cadd9, E, F, Am, Em. also learn power chords, and bar chords. then learn purple haze, and also lots of song are only power chords

---5----------4---
---3----------6---
---3----------6----

examples of power chords, you can put them anywhere on the neck on the top two strings

For one, don't waste your lessons learning things like tuning your guitar. You should be able to walk into the first lesson and actually start playing things.

Do you have any musical experience?

No, I have none. I think that's why it seems so intimidating.

Congratz :)

Since you don't have any musical experience, then I think you should get acquainted with guitar tabs, like the two power chords shown above. What got me going, was Guitar Pro and tabs from ultimate-guitar.com. You can pretty much get any song you want from there in writing or as a guitar pro file. Guitar pro plays these songs as midi files while showing the tabs and you can even select to see the way they are held on a visual guitar neck. Of course, these tabs are made by other members of the ultimate-guitar community and are not always correct, but they are still a neat way to learn the opportunities of a guitar. I remember learning all blink 182's songs this way during my first summer of playing (started when I was 12). Now I'm 17 and play songs by ear.

Although I didn't win my Strat, I'm in a similar situation: I'm 44 with no prior musical training. In addition to taking lessons, I really recommend the book Music Theory for Guitarists: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask. It has helped me a lot. Best of luck and rock on! 8)

Hey R Collier,

I've been playing off and on for about a year, but in the past 6 months I picked up a copy of Rock Guitar for beginners by Rock House. It's better than any other book/dvd that I've tried.

I play 3-4 times a week after work and if you're looking at this to get started on an amazing hobby, I strongly reccommend this.

Congrats on the guitar btw! have fun with it!

hey i dont know if the person who postted this forum will even read this fare into it but here my addvice. find some band thaat you really like and try and learn there songs, learning to play song s that you actually like is alot more fun then playing the things they try to make you learn with in lessons. i took two lessons where they tryed to teach me things like little boepeep and some other songs i have never even heard of and then said screw this ill teach myself. i have been playing for about 5 months and i already know 6 songs by jimi, im getting really good and im allready trying to put together a band. you just have to have fun learning if its not fun then you wont enjoy it and you wont want to learn.
