I've never been a stickler for finish type on a guitar. Regardless of the hype, it's applied to protect the wood and provide an attractive visual for both player and audience. I've got instruments with many different finishes -- nitro, acrylic, poly-goo, enamel. They all sound good and not one of my sixteen vintage Fender amps has ever complained ......

I am sure you are right.

I would like a Nitro for no other reason than I like the way they age. My "Old Faithful" Strat has discoloured plastic, rust here and there and lacquer coming off the fretboard but (aside one ding on the bottom edge) the black poly finish looks as good as when I bought it 21 years ago.

If I don't get one soon I may run out of years before I can age a new one legitimately (through use not artificially).

1959 was a great year for Strats as it completed the transition from maple to rosewood fretboards. I'd love to have one in Desert Sand with a gold anodized pickguard......

Hmmm, and I suddenly have the urge to buy a Classic Series 50s MIM, have a rare custom finish applied to it and upgrade the pickups.

It never ends, does it?

Nope.

The Strat is such an aesthetically-pleasing "canvas" that an inspired artist could spend decades exploring all the visual possibilities......a timeless classic. Then factor in all the pickup and switching variations and one could make a career out of such an esoteric and nearly infinite journey.

Nope, indeed. I went thoroughly modern last week and traded for one of the new American Standard HSS Shawbucker Strats. Turns out that I did need another Black Strat after all. :)

I tried to love HSS Strats through the years. I had an MIM Deluxe Lone Star, a Highway One and an American Deluxe but none was a long term keeper. This one is, with the dual 500k/250k pot and a humbucker with output that is better balanced with the Fat 50s single coils. My tone and switching variations have definitely been expanded with the Shawbucker.

Okay, I really am done for a while.

I think thefenderforum.com used a pic of that Strat on the header of their home page for many years.

Cool guitar!

If you look up "jerkoff" in your Funk & Wagnall's, you'll see his photograph.

Thanks, Jim!

Seems like there's a few folks who share your sentiment.

Thanks, Martian.

It's sure sounding sweet through my '66 Vibrolux Reverb.
