I've never been a stickler for finish type on a guitar. Regardless of the hype, it's applied to protect the wood and provide an attractive visual for both player and audience. I've got instruments with many different finishes -- nitro, acrylic, poly-goo, enamel. They all sound good and not one of my sixteen vintage Fender amps has ever complained about lack of "tonal transparency", "ambient resonance", or any of the other trendy arguments du jour.

Thanks, Chet.

And I was mistaken about the length of time this guitar took to build.

I thought it was 2½ years -- it was actually closer to three.

"I will complete no Strat before its time."

Ha...neither have my amps :D

...but what's on my mind is how fragile the finish is on my latest build...

...the body is a new Fender Vintage Hot Rod 50's 2 tone SB...with a "thin coat" Nitro finish...

...I made the mistake of supporting it with a soft rubber mat on the bench...that same pattern is now in the finish on 3 spots...

...not to mention pick scratches...holy moley...it's more sensitive than a teenager with a zit on the day of the dance! :D

Anyway I've not heard of a finish that can be applied over Poly and it's intriguing...I gotta go there.

Yeah, I've heard that those thin-skin finishes are extremely fragile. That sort of defeats the entire purpose of a finish as a protective coat but it's great for getting a headstart on the whole relic vibe. Nitro also doesn't seem to care for foam rubber as found on the supporting arms of many guitar stands -- it often leaves stains on the finish at every point of contact.

Great color and perfect with the maple fretboard.
Love to hear those pickups.
How about a family photo Arjay? :D

I've seen several modern Custom Shop Strats in Taos Turquoise which some dealer ordered (Sweetwater? Wildwood?) that had rosewood necks and to me, they just did not look "right" with that color. They looked good, but just not as pleasing as with the maple furniture.

Great looking Strat, Arjay! Agreed on the maple fretboard going better with Taos Turquoise, too. J.C. Harper really nailed that finish. Congrats and enjoy.

Indeed he did, John.

Thanks for the kind words.

Very nice indeed, Arjay.
Congrats!
Your choice of colour is perfect.
Now you have me curious to find out just exactly how that colour looks in the flesh.

(the '55 Chevy 2DHT was always my fav shoebox)

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Glad you like it.

Here's a Custom Shop relic (presumably factory photos) in Taos Turquoise......

Compare and contrast with the finish color on mine.

I love that color. I just picked up a Daphne Blue strat and thought that color was my favorite, but that is a really cool color. Kinda falls between Surf Green and Daphne. You dont see it very often and a really nice finish job.

I would say more of a symbiosis of Sea Foam Green and Daphne Blue. With a bit of a "neon" twist.

Thats an accurate description. Of all the strats , the 50 vibe is my absolute favorite. Fender built great guitars during those years. Two of mine are 59 reissues . By far my favorites.

1959 was a great year for Strats as it completed the transition from maple to rosewood fretboards. I'd love to have one in Desert Sand with a gold anodized pickguard......
