Meet “The Big Kahuna”......

Image

This instrument began life as a 1999 MIM Classic Series 50’s Strat in Surf Green. I had the body professionally refinished in Taos Turquoise, which has to be one of the most difficult colors to capture accurately with a camera. I think it has something to do with the pseudo-neon pigments that seem to overwhelm a digital camera’s CCD. I had to tweak these shots with editing software to get the hue even close to the actual shade as perceived by the naked eye.

Image

The shot using indirect sunlight (no flash) in my garage comes closest to depicting the true color.

Image

Master luthier J.C. Harper of Apple Valley, CA handled the painting duties and my personal luthier worked his mojo with the neck and frets, then dialed in his world-class set up. It plays like frying bacon smells. The pickups are DiMarzio’s Virtual Vintage noiseless: a Solo Pro (long discontinued) in the bridge, a Heavy Blues in the middle, and a Heavy Blues II at the neck (much of my solo work is done with the neck pickup and I prefer a hot coil in that position). This instrument was built to resemble a ‘55 Strat and has the characteristic Tele-style string tree, the “football” switch tip, and a period-correct four-digit serial stamped on the neck plate. The center-pocket G&G tweed case with Kelly Green interior provides a nice visual vibe for a Strat in a rarely-seen custom color.

Hope y'all enjoy it

Arjay

Arjay, congrats on completing the project! I had to invent a higher rating on the T2 Scale just for this beauty! So it rates a SCHWEET to the 10 Power!

Just a note though, it is much "Bluer" on this screen than on my Galaxy S4 phone...it looked greener on that screen. You got it right that must be a tuff color to photograph!

May you play many fine songs and solos together!

Arjay,

Glad to see that you finally got your Taos Turquoise finished!

It is really a beautiful guitar and it looks like it was worth the wait.! I didn't know you used J.C. Harper to do the finish on the guitar. He did a fantastic job (just like he did on my 62 Jazzmaster). He has a couple of photos of your body on his Facebook page. I really like the green interior of that case, it goes really well with the guitar color.

Hope it bring you many years of enjoyment.

Jerry

Thanks, guys.

I sent Jon a few photos of the completed guitar -- he may post those as well on his FB page.

Very nice indeed. You need to get a Vaporizer to lean it against.

Looking absolutely fabulous.
The neck; does it have some kind of tint, or is the shade all natural? I mean, leaning against that white wall, she just seems to be whispering 'Hey babe, looking for a good time..?'

LMAO!

Fender applies a artificial tint to the necks of these Classic Series Strats and some of their other instruments like the Roadworn's to provide "mojo". It looks a bit dramatic in my pics, likely as a result of my efforts to get the body color to appear correct via editing software. Here's another shot, a skosh less processed than the others......

Image

Compared to my sunburst 50's Classic Series Strat from 1998 at the upper left, the turquoise guitar's neck is actually a bit lighter.

Thanks for the kind words.

Congrats Arjay! Now that's a beautiful "ting". How about a Taos Turquoise '56 Chevy to go with your '55 Strat.

And for those keeping score, what's the current count in the 6-String Stables?

Cheers!

The guitar looks great and is very unique Strat. I've never seen this color up close or in real life, so I'm not very familiar with it. Is the color a solid color or a metallic? The third photo looks metallic to me.

The reason I ask is because I have often found that both my Candy Green Clapton Strat and self painted Bahama Blue Thinline Tele are also difficult to get right in photos. As for the Thinline, I was going for that aged Lake Placid Blue look.
