Anyone have any thoughts on the build quality of late 80s vs. mid-90s American Standard Strats?? I have an 89 (w/ gold Lace Sensors) and a 95 (stock pups) and the 95 feels like it has a smaller neck and a more "correct" headstock--the 89 is indeed beefier though I think I like the 95 more-sonically they're quite different, needless to say. Your takes???

I owned a 89 black mia strat that I bought new.
It was my first fender strat. I routed it out for a HB in the bridge.
I had a custom neck made out of bacodi wood for it (not fender).
Unfortunately, it's gone now,
Our studio was ran sacked & EVERYTHING was stolen in Jan 94.
So I went & bought a 93 MiA sunburst strat new which I still have today.
I even had another bacodi neck made for it but unfortunately this neck & body just dont seem to match up the way my black strat did.
Don't get me wrong I love this strat, ALOT... but that 89 was something really special.
So oddly enough for me it seems to be the other way around.
I will say this though, my 89 strat did seem a little "beefier" as u put it
than my 93.
The cool thing is that I still have both original fender necks virtually unplayed.
89 - rosewood
93 - maple
I don't have recordings of my 93 strat on myspace right now
but u can listen to my black strat on songs like:
The I, Higher, Peer On, or Future Alive.
Check it out: Exploration X

I have a '95 - '96 and I think it's great; I like the way the neck feels, much better than the newer models, in my opinion.

From my experience build quality started to improve around 89 and was fairly consistant (allthough not as consistant as today's standatrds) in the 90's.

Number 1: There is a special place in hell for guitar thieves. My 91 MIA Standard was kidnapped a year and a half ago.

Number 2: The Eighties were a funky time for Fender. I don't mean funky in a good way either. The 60's reissues are good and very sought after, and in the late 80's we saw the return of the standard. I would say to stick to anything that resembles an Am. Std. IMO the "Strat" (ya know with the painted head stock that says "the strat" on it) is a joke. And not a funny one. I mean really... floyd rose trem, pick ups mounted in the body, input jack in the side of the body. Ibanez called.... they want their RG back.

I've stepped on enough toes for now.
