You joined the forums in 2007, and have 6 posts......of course you didn't get the answer you wanted----you didn't WANT an answer. Keep beating your switch; we don't HAVE to care, or try to help you....but we did, and you didn't like the answers. Your on your own.

What do you want us to tell you? The switch is where it is....and you play the way you play....there are only so many solutions.

P.S.- You're welcome.

Yeah, every type of answer, from trying different guitars, relocating the switch, custom pick guard, turning the switch around, a rotary switch.......WTF does this jerk want?

The inescapable fact of the matter is, some folks just naturally like to snivel and whine.

This was my answer to that dilemma. It's a Warmouth pg. I cut the slit for the selector switch myself, and rewired it with one tone knob.

Thanks, here's a clearer picture in case the op is interested. I cut 90% of the slot with a dremel and finished it off with a nail file. Where I have the selector switch mounted, JUST clears the edge of the route with no problem. The angle of the switch provides a pretty natural sweep of the hand to operate it.
This pickguard in installed in another Strat now. I was in a Strat modding frenzy for a while there.

What I like most about your mod is that it doesn't draw attention to itself.
A quick glance and you wouldn't notice what has been done.
The execution is excellent :D

I have never found the Strat's switch placement to be problematic. Nice job, Drew. Goes to show not everyone desires the stock placement
of that switch.

I have, although seldom if ever, inadvertently rolled off the volume. :x To me, this would more likely be an issue for some before the switch gets in the way IMHO. I prefer the Strat's volume control where it is though, as I use it for effect as well as for setting the volume in a fixed position.

As for the original switch question, maybe this is the answer:

+1

And totally reversible if need be.

WOW! You'd have to really hate the 5 position switch to put up with that.

I agree. The best mods always look like they were done at the factory.

I can't say I've ever had this problem, as said it seems out of the way to me as well.

Well then, there's this one which makes it easier to accidentally hit the switch.

Some of these button or multiple switch guitars (Jags excluded for example) came about from accordion companies as their squeeze boxes fell out of favour with the introduction of rock and roll. Considering the accordion's origin was invented some 3000 years B.C., perhaps it was time. However, they are still around and can be found on some rock recordings even today.

WELL, it seems the OP was a bit sensitive, as I thought that on balance the replies were reasonable and in some cases helpful. But I wouldn't be too hard on him for asking the original question, as I find it hard to believe that longtime Strat players have never once accidentally knocked the pickup selector out of position. After playing them for almost forty years it still occasionally happens to me!

Back when there was no such thing as the five-position switch, only the three-position one, guys like Eric Clapton made things tough on us amateurs by touting the "out-of-phase" sound you could get from a Strat by lodging the selector midway between positions 1 and 2 (counting from the bridge). Since there was no detent there, it seemed like you could knock the switch out of position by merely breathing on it! Very frustrating. Over the years I simply learned to avoid the switch if I was going to play a chord involving a sweeping gesture.

That said, I can't think of too many products offhand whose original design has remained practical and useful over the span of sixty-plus years, so the pickup selector location is the equivalent of the gnat on the elephant's arse.

I assume that is how Pete Townsend manages. :D

I agree with you in respect of design. I struggle to think of any other mechanical product which is available today and (in particular guise) identical to, and as desirable as, that produced 60 years ago.
