I'm not about to debate possible tone difference except to say some great songs also included the tray.
With that in mind, and being one of those who, at times, found himself picking just in front of the bridge, the bridge cover kind of mucketty-mucked that up.

There WAS a reason for the bridge covers with which the Strat's were originally supplied.

There's also been some discussion on the ashtrays acting as a shield against electric interference, but there is no empiric research data available because nobody has ever used the ashtray on a guitar.

I'm going to make an ashtray out of all my bent steel saddles that I have taken off every Fender I have, and bolt it to the headstock. It will eventually catch on as an essential accessory.

Fender has a glorious history, is that still where the future is locked in?
I'm flummoxed :? as to why Fender does not continue to set the standards, and locked in the past, by still using superseded bent steel saddles with latest strat releases, when most serious trem users go for block saddles and 2 point for better tuning stability. :?:  :?:

+1 on John Sims method of DIY grinding grub screws in an old saddle, they fit in a vise or a pair of pliers that way.

I'm really surprised that Fender doesn't include these in more of their RI, LE or Anniversary models.

you had to go there "tuning stability" all factors of setup imho, no difference between saddle types....

On most of the US-made models you've mentioned, Fender does -- so long as the bridge (either trem or hardtail) is vintage-spec with 2-7/32" string spacing. The trem cover comes as part of the case candy.

Timeless, classic design should be offered as long as it works well. Fender did set the standard, and they've stuck with it because......it's the standard. They offer plenty of other models, that meet most everyone's needs, and if the Standard didn't sell, they would move on. The fact remains that the classic Fender still sells very well, and that says it all.

Perhaps those who want to retrofit their vintage guitars to spec. Going back nearly 50 years I can speak to that little chunk of metal sitting in the guitar case all by its lonesome for time immemorial.
