What do you use for strings?

I played acoustic for over 30 years before I got my first electric. Played a lot of friends' 12 string acoustics and it looked like they had combined light and medium sets.

I got a used 12 string Strat and was going to combine a set of 9's and 10's on it but Elixer had a 12 string set packaged up so got it instead. Sounded better than what was on it but not what I wanted. Read more on the box and both 1st strings were .010, both 2nd strings were .013 and then it breaks into combinations for the other 4 pairs. Pretty much one string of the pair being twice the size of the other(the G strings are .017/.009). Not what I remember from acoustics. Tried the 9's/10's and it felt more normal for a 12 but still didn't sound right. Now about ready to try 8's/10's.

Maybe a packaged set from another company that has different pair combinations would be better? I'm not really that fond of changing 6 strings much less 12 and don't want to keep reinventing the wheel if someone else has found something that works or doesn't. I don't play lead on it - a short little run that repeats itself a few times is ok but mainly just use it for power and barre chords.

Any suggestions?

I seriously doubt that anyone bothers to combine different sets of strings gauges on a 12 string - it's a pain restringing a 6 string, a 12 string doubly so, and most players would just fit what comes in the set and have done with it.

I use D'Addario strings on all of the electric 6 strings here, so I'd look at D'Addario for 12 string sets if I had a 12 string electric to consider.
D'Addario strings are also widely available to buy as single strings, so you could put together a custom set if you wanted to.

They seem to be the same as the Elixer set except nickel instead of steel and one of the G's are .008 instead of .009. Worth a try though but it doesn't seem right that one of the G strings would be lighter than the high E's. That is why I mixed a set of 9's and 10's on it - 9's on the even numbered strings and 10's on the odds since that is the pattern that the boxed set followed.

As long as the intonation can be correctly set, I doubt that it makes a difference. If they feel "right" to you, they probably are.

The electric XII (any brand/type) seems to be treated like a red-headed step child by most string manufacturers.

Haven't had any intonation problems. Kinda surprising since the pairs share saddles and on 4 through 6 one string is twice the gauge of the other.

The 9/10 combo felt "right" and what I remember from 12 string acoustics but been awhile.
