Actually that's not correct at all. Allman played some of the lead, and most of the slide.

allman played all the slide lead
on layla

The debate on who played what is pointless, weren't we discussing "Brownie"? On a last note, I think highwayoneplayer is talking about the song "Layla" itself, rather than the whole album, in which case he is right about Allman's lead. Okay... Done with that?

Looking at the photo of that "brownie" strat, it doesn't look much different than a three tone sunburst. I assume that there is more of a difference, but I didn't really see it. Fender probably doesn't make it because they two guitars are too much alike thus they make one vs the other.

I think it was just a 1956 Stratocaster and they were all made of ash and had sunburst finish.

I think my 50th ann. limited edition comes about as close visualy as you can get.

O.k. the bridge has modern saddles and the neck is a C shape, but with a little imagination !!!!!

sure wish I knew how to post a picture of her.

Here's a little item on Brownie at the Experience Music Project (in Seattle).

Image

Fender switched from ash to alder in the sunbursts in mid-1956, which is what Brownie is, but I've not seen anything saying what Brownie is. I've assumed it was alder, but I suppose it could be ash.

You may be right because that was not a custom color which remand ash or blonde. Thats is something to look into I had forgot they change and was thinking that was 1959.
