Hey Y'all

Shiny spankin brand new newbie here - at least to this forum. Please be gentle.

I have 5 Strats right now. I love Strats. I have a couple of Tele's too, but I am a Strat guy pretty much forever.

My 96 Strat Ultra, a very sweet guitar, has a small problem. I use this guitar more than any other guitar I own, and I own a bunch. I play out fairly often and rehearse regularly. My problem is that I keep losing the screw on button for the Schaller locking tuners on that guitar. Its always a different string. I will reach back there to tighten it up and get that very nasty sinking feeling when my fingers find no knurled little dime sized knob on the peg. I have bought many replacements.

I have noticed in recent years that Schaller has made it so the knobs don't fall off - a very cool thing. I would love to change out to these newer style keys, but the units are not the same. I bought a set from StewMac. The screw holes and the locating pin are not in the same place. (Each key has a pin that fits in a hole to keep it straight and lined up.) I don't want to drill new holes - I hate that look. Anybody know of a replacement fit that doesn't lose the knobs? I would really appreciate a nudge in the right direction.

Hmm, not sure of the precise specs of your existing tuners, so I'm not going to venture an opinion that might send you the wrong way.

But two suggestions: first, check the Schaller website:

http://schaller-guitarparts.de/hp762/Produkte.htm

There's pretty clear photos of all their different tuners, so you can find the ones you want. Many of them have screw holes rather than the pins you are talking about, but the position of that hole varies from model to model, so take care. I seem to remember that there are technical drawings available somewhere on that site, too.

Second, talk to StewMac. I have found them incredibly helpful with advice on many occasions. Also, I believe they are an official Schaller dealer, which ought to mean that if they don't stock a particular model they can order it. Ought to mean that...
