Hi, first time on the forum. Looking for help with a used purchase. It's a 1996 Am Std 50th Anniversary (not the limited edition) Strat. Validated serial number and specs with Fender. Looks great but the neck plate has no logo or other marking. It does have the micro adjustment hole. Since I've never seen a blank plate, what should I make of this? Looked at similars on ebay and they say Fender on the plate.

Thanks for your help.

I'm curious about that neck plate, too.

Here are two videos I did covering the 1980s/90s American Std. Strats. I think I mention it in the videos, but just in case I didn't, in about '96, Fender returned to the classic “Spaghetti” Fender logo and placed the s/n on the back of the headstock. The reason I'm telling you this is that the guitar I'm using as an example is from '91/'92. Overall, the guitar remained relatively unchanged from '87 till '00 with the introduction of the American Series Strats. It sounds like you're pretty knowledgable, so these videos might not that interesting to you, but they add something that you might not have known.

In the videos, I give the general ins and outs of what to look for when purchasing these guitars.

Just for clarification, there is nothing special about these guitars. Every Fender instruments received the 50th Anniversary sticker on the back of the headstock. These stickers do not make them “Anniversary” addition guitars, just stock models with a sticker. This happened again in 2006 when added a little metal disk exclaiming, “60th Anniversary.” Most people don’t realize this, so we see a lot of 1996 “Anniversary” Stratocasters floating around.

I did some detective work on the pictures.

The neck plate looks like it had a piece of foil duct tape covering it. Perhaps to protect the original neck plate.

Overall, the owner seems pretty strait forward about it being a modified guitar. If you're concerned, e-mail the seller.

Thank you for your detailed response. I'll take a look at the videos. I am aware of the special edition 1996, with gold HW, only 2500 made, etc., much more expensive. This is simply an American STD in very nice shape and color I like. It has been modified with locking tuners, graphtec saddles and roller type nut. I guess the real question is what is the possible risk I am taking, leaving aside the normal risks of buying online (playability, feel, tone, etc)?

Thank you, you are right, it actually looks like the foil is still on...I magnified it and you can see the edges and the chrome underneath.

Contacted the seller....during this process, same conclusion.
Your opinion on the price?

Two ways you could go about the price, look around or check out a buyer's guide. I own a 2014 guyer's guide. I'll get back to you on it. The fact that it's been monkeyed with may hurt the price. I never get too upset about alerations as long as I like them and I know about them going in.

I purchased a '75 Strat and '76 Strat, both had been modified in some way. The price reflected this. For the '75, the neck had been flattened to 12" radius. For the '75, the tone pots had been replaced. Not a big deal. They both sound awesome.

I don't play my Clapton Strat too much anymore. It really needs a fret job badly.

I just purchased a 2015 Deluxe Strat Plus (the model with the personality cards). It's like having a very modern Strat with and two other guitars in one body. Fender will be coming out with more cards in the neaer future. I look foward to it.

Thanks for your thoughts on the videos. I did a 4 part series on 1970s Strats as well. I'm planning on doing a review of the Dlx Strat Plus in a few weeks. I've been busy so the guitar world is on hold.

Any advice about improving my videos? I'm new and have little experience or at these sorts of things.

Paris, thanks again!

I'm not a video expert either, but personally like people on demos to get to the point, show or play....that's what I liked on your videos......along with good info and facts of course. The set, HD, sound, etc....is also important if you'll be doing them regularly.

Hope that helps...

According toy 2014 price guide, these guitars in excellent condtion, from low to high, are valued from $700-$875. With the upgrades and tweed case (if it's a Fender casr) seems worth the price the seller asking. Keep mind that this is altered guitar and other buyers might not see it that way. Good luck and thanks for your advice.
