Indeed, as I have. Using all Fender parts I have converted a mid specification MIM to a guitar (almost?) comparable with my 21year old American Deluxe.

The retro parts are certainly cheaper to manufacture and inferior in use to the later design Deluxe components. My point was that Fender, very cleverly, turn this around by noting the (cheap/inferior) parts as "Vintage" and thus present them as a positive.

I think this all the time when I play my MIM Std. Fabulous guitar. But as someone who often uses the 22nd fret, it is often frustrating that has only 21. I get where the OP is going.

How & why did this trend get so complicated
Several forum members already stated the obvious. Strats are know for their capabilities of being easily modded. The other option is a custom shop. IMO is as simple as that...

Speaking for myself, I use to own shred demons 24 fret pointy head stock axe's. I got rid of them. Nothing feels at home like a Fender neck in my hand.

Lets also look at the various options of available models that are massed produced. I love my heavy metal, but I also love blues & classic rock. I have a collection of Strats and recently added my 1st MIM Modren player HH Tele to my guitar collection. I find that Fender instruments are very versatile. I like the fact that I can split the coils in my Tele, but I can also run high gain through it. Is it going to have the sonic characteristics of a true single coil, of course not, but if I were looking to achieve true single coil sound then I would pick the right Fender from my collection to get the job done. Do I miss having an extra fret or 2, can't say I do. I find that Fender has tried to appeal to a different markets with their various designs and commend them for doing so. They have my buisness and loyalty for the past 8yrs. There are so many options available when it comes to Fender instruments, cant find what you are looking for then Mod your Strat or Tele...my 2 cents

I agree. I have an original Aria Pro II TS600 - I bought it instead of a new 25th Anniversary Strat (and spent the last 25 years regretting my mistake). It is none the less an exceptionally good 24 fret guitar -but it doesn't nestle in to you, and become a part of you the way a Strat does.

But, to return to the excelent point made above - if you must have 22 frets bolt on a 22 fret neck. Job done.
