Interesting. Best we could understand as to Clapton swapping out the gold Lace Sensors for the VN's was that they were 'brighter'. Certainly one can get more 'air' by changing the circuitry. However, there's always been this underlying suspicion that FMIC wanted to get out from under Actodyne, Industries and a dependence on their pickups. I expect that somewhere in the middle is the truth of it. My preferences has always been the Laces for the Clapton. I like that 'throaty' tone, particularly through my RAT pedal.

That throaty tone is ideal for EC's slide repertoire.

Unfortunately Clapton's association with Lace pickups came into an end in February 2010, his slide axes were fitted with VNs to reflect the changes he did in his main stage guitars. As a result the TBX was replaced with a regular 250K pot.

He already played slide guitar with a VN-equipped axe in 2006.

As many times as we've revisited this change, it has always piqued my curiosity as to why Fender did not make the changes in the Artist and Custom Shop Signature Series guitars. We know that, with respect to the latter, they had, only to revert back to the TBX. Only the Masterbuilt remained without the TBX.

It's because Eric wanted each production line (standard, teambuilt, masterbuilt) having different specs each other.

The teambuilt EC Customs produced before 2009 sported the same specs as the masterbuilts but the former Yardbird finally opted for a teambuilt axe combining the elements from two different guitars: "Not all my signature axes would look and sound same."

With the exceptions of woods, as Mike Eldred reviewed with us years ago..e.g. two piece vs 3 piece bodies....and neck woods....the electronics of the Artist and Custom Shop Signature guitars are identical.

. The Masterbuilt guitar is the only one which replicates the stage guitar in that department.

Had seen Whereseric website yesterday, the 70-years old British blues-rock supremo will perform the first of the nine birthday celebration concerts at MSG next Friday.

I wouldn't expect an "EPC Rosso" Strat for those performances, ditto for the upcoming one-offs following his retirement off the road. :|

It's because of all this 'evolution' of specs that I view the two early model Clapton Strats I own as closer to home with respect to the introduction of the Signature Series in '88. Personally, David Gilmour gave his audience a better deal with his replicas not only in terms of model choices, but cost. Probably the best deal of that genre that Fender ever floated.

Really? Had that been confirmed?
Anyway you forgot the fourth - standard, teambuilt, masterbuilt, Eric's own :D

Grigio Grey retired from active service after spending 9 years on the road; for the 70th birthday concerts he ended up with a modernized Brownie and a purple hazed guitar strap, nice gift! :D

I've just posted a topic about a possible release of the modernized Brownie in the form of an LTD.

I guess there were more differences on the older gear (thinking 90s produced guitars). Like you say.. the whacky glue, the body paint which was so thin you could almost blow it off, deeper contours etc. All documented.

I haven't seen any facts about the more recent productions. I would say I reckon they're not poly-finished bodies, as you can pretty much tell from the look. Other than that I don't know.
