Hey Guys, Need some guidance. I have a 2012 Fender American Deluxe V-Neck Strat with N3 S1 Switching and the 5 Ways Switch has gone out in a couple of positions. I pulled up the service diagram and it shows the 5 Way Switch Part Number was 0078776000 which is now discontinued. Which 5 Way Switch should I get for a direct replacement. I wished Fender would update the discontinued part numbers as this gets confusing for newbs like me. Any help much appreciated.

I have tested it by setting the switch to each position and strummed and when in position 3 & 4, I get no tone, just an audible hum when I pick the strings. Checked continuity across all three pick-ups and they show nothing out of the ordinary. It has to be the selector switch. Process of elimination brought me to the switch. I bought the guitar used and some of the soldering inside is terrible, dull gray solder joints that run everywhere. I know Fender did not do this, somebody has been fiddling with the electronics I'm pretty sure. I have cleaned up the excess globs with solder remover braid and checked the switch again and nothing on 3 & 4. Cleaned the switch with contact cleaner and blew off with canned air but this is not helping. Thus I need to figure out which 5 way switch I can use with the N3/S1 config.

Thank you for the help!!!!! Very much appreciated.

Yes it might the switch .
Hum at position 3 and 4 could be the ground wire from these pickups .

If you have to wait for that new "0991367000" switch (mail etc.) you could try resoldering the old one - that would diagnose the defect even better.

BTW, there seem to be some "0078776000" switches available in in amazon, but just maybe that part# series had too many defective ones and that's why they switched the switch.

Reminds me of an old mini-bike I fixed up as a kid. Had a broken valve cover cap so I wired a tuna fish can over it to keep(most of) the dirt out of the engine. All the dealers said that the bike was too old and the part number had been discontinued. After a year or two, one guy at the parts counter pointed out that the exact same part was used on pretty much every Honda ever made. Just under different part numbers.

Bottom line? Unless it is a S-1 or a super switch then a 5 way switch is just that - a 5 way switch. There must be different qualities because I can feel the difference between the ones in my MIA, MIM, and Squier. Kind of like changing gears in a nice car then changing gears in a cheap econo-box - just feels different. Still does the same thing though.

If contemplating the 5-way Super Switch, be sure that you verify there is enough room inside the cavity route for all the wiring - that thing is a Monster !

Ask me how I know...

cheers!

5 ways switch and super switch are not the same . "Standard " 5 way will do the job , why super switch ?

Simply a word of caution, that's all.

Some may be enticed by the 'Super' Switch. It offers a lot in terms of simplified wiring options.

But, it is HUGE and won't fit into a standard route w/o putting a lot of stress on the solder joints.

cheers!
