I've read a bunch of reviews where nobody seems to care for strats with the 5th position S-1 switch activated, so naturally when I got my American Deluxe I had to check it out and find out just how bad it is.

Reminder:
Position 5. Bridge and Middle Pickup in Series and Out-Of-Phase, and in Parallel with Neck Pickup

Turns out I like it! Like a weird electronic lo-fi sound it's kind of fun. Definitely not for every situation, but I'm glad it's there.

Are any of you guys using it?

Here's a clip I recorded yesterday.

My Deluxe Strat Plus (with the personality cards) has a similar set up, only I'm not sure about the whole, "in Series and Out-Of-Phase, and in Parallel" thing. One card allows me to use all three pickups at one time, with either a strong bridge or neck pickup voicing, depending on which postion the selector switch is in.

I'll have to check out your sound file. Thanks for sharing. By the way, what kind song could you imagine using this tonal color? For instance, one of my cards with my guitar has a treble and bass cut abilities, which gives me a "Living Loving Maid (She's Just a Woman)" and "Heartbreaker" Zepplin sound.

Okey, so I think I answered my own question. Nice soundcloud recording. It's got a really non-Strat sound about it, which I like. I wonder if it could be used in other styles of music?

Yes I think I tried it with some distortion a few times. It was a little too sharp and biting but probably user error. I'll try to record something one of these days.

I like what they're doing with the personality cards. How do you like your strat?

Very interesting for slide playing. On a tweed amp or jtm45 amp, it's a very root sound

Nice sound, Wayne. Yes, I sometimes use the 5th S1 position (not for anything specific). At first it was foreign to my ears, but I've grown to like it enough to find uses for it.

By the way, what strings and amp did you use? TIA.

Thanks. Yes it does sound strange at first. Also requires some fiddling with knobs to get right. I also used an MXR Carbon Copy Delay. I think I had it before the amp but it was possibly in the loop. I forgot to write it down when I recorded.

Ernie Ball Super Slinky Pure Nickel (9's)

Good thread, Wayne2. I've wondered the same thing myself.

One of the reasons I got the Am Deluxe was for the expanded tonal possibilities via the S-1 which effectively doubles the number to ten. After hearing the sound with the S-1 ON in the 5th position, I thought to myself "9 out of 10 isn't bad". I couldn't think of a situation where this sound would be desirable but after hearing the color of the sound in your example I can see with the proper treatment it can be useful.

Like Paris, I'm not too sure about the phase/parallel specs, but the description of the S-1 ON in the 5th position reads as follows in the wiring diagram of my 2011 Am Deluxe :
    Neck Pickup OUT OF
    PHASE & PARALLEL
    Middle, Bridge Pickup
    IN SERIES
    Tone 1 ONLY

Cheers!
BM

It has been said that a Gibson can only sound like a Gibson but a Strat can sound somewhat like a Gibson

I won't buy into this completely; but, in light of the VG Strat (Roland modelling), the American Strat Plus (interchangeable personality cards and solderless pickups), Deluxe HSS Strats (such as the Fishman Triple Play) with USB and Midi, faster, more powerful, and more downsizing computer chips coming out now and in the future, possible remote control from your axe to your outboard playback equipment be they pedals, amps, racks, mixers or the like, and with future developments, one may find that S1 switch (or similar) useful in another wiring configuration, and who knows, maybe that Strat/Gibson combo sound is attainable. More likely a Strat/other Strat of choice will be in the cards. Several economic and marketing benefits could cause this to come to fruition.

We might even see pickup technology have a revolutionary change. Revolutions, including newly introduced sounds, happened with keyboards and drums, while the old classics still remain. It certainly seems there is room for both new and old .

Maybe not in my time, so I'll enjoy my S1 position 5 as is, and look to alternative guitars for alternative sounds, for now 8)

I very much see the personality cards as the next step in the s1 vane. Fender will be introducing 11 more cards in June. I suspect that at least one will be the current S1 switch.

Good to know about those 11 cards, Paris.

Maybe, Fender will combine specific pups with specific cards, and offer them as an optimum package (with the stock or chosen pups as the option for desired bliss).

The future looks bright (as long as we don't have battery issues to deal with).
