How's it going everyone. I recently purchased a mim classic series 50s Stratocaster. I am looking to upgrade the pickups and wanted some advice. I play a variety of classic rock like Clapton, eagles, led zeplin, pink Floyd and queen. I was looking at the Seymour Duncan ssl 5 in the bridge and ssl 1 in the neck and middle but also found some custom shop Texas specials used pretty cheap. Does anyone have any input on these pickups or recommendations for other pickups? Thanks in advance.

Two words of advice for you......

"Fat"

And "50's"

For optimum sonic results, be sure to change your tone cap out to a PIO type of .022 or .033 ufd.

Bought some Custom Shop Texas Special's for my Highway One Strat about 6 months ago, and have yet to fall in love with them. Not 'disappointed', but not 'impressed' either.
Tried them through Tube and Solid State amps, and I still have yet to find the "sound" that I got them for. Probably have to experiment with pedals.

funny that so far Fat 50s and Texas Specials have been called.

I've got two strats, one has fat 50s the other Texas Specials.

The Texas Specials are good pickups but they are pretty aggressive, the bridge pickup can just hurt people.

this:
have yet to fall in love with them. Not 'disappointed', but not 'impressed' either.

that seems to be the general consensus with texas specials. you either love em, or you hate em, and sometimes, it's both!

the Fat 50s just have a bit more of an opened (or more traditional Strat) sound to them, especially in those "in between" settings, I would say overall they are a bit more refined with a smoother sounding low end while still maintaining the strat bite that you want.

That's it, in a nutshell.

Warmer, more organic.

Arjay got that right: if you want that tone, try the fat 50's.

If you want something more bluesy/country for change, get a second strat with Texas Specials.

Yes the fat 50s are the bees knees. I have them in my MIA Standard and really like them.

I have a set of the TS in my 60s Classic Series Strat and they are aggressive and they do sound great for Blues since they have a bit more edge to em...I like em for just that, when I want to crank some electric blues I like that extra push they have.

I have five Strats and I am beginning to think a pair of Fat 50's might find their way into one of em, because it seems every time I hear a set they sound amazing.

Hi James -
All of the above is good about the Fat 50s, but I recently
heard a guitarist playing most of what you mentioned and
he had a DiMarzio Fast Track Strat Pickup Set - worth checking
out in my humble opinion.

I have the Fat 50s in my MIM strat and love them. One of the best gear decisions I ever made. My strat has a 0.1 mfd Orange Drop type 716 100V cap in it.

My American Deluxe Strat has N3 Noiseless and at first thought about changing them to true single coils but lately they have really grown on me. Futzing with the amp EQ gets them sounding a little more like the Fat 50s and they seem to record very well due to their slightly softer attack.

I was looking hard at SSL-1s for the Am Deluxe just because Frusciante uses them and I like his tone in "Dosed". But I am happy the N3s worked out.
