Well said !!!

I can almost kinda go with the neck factor as being the biggest "playability" component in the system.
I have some guitars with necks that I just can't navigate as easily as others.

I'll agree that if you can relate well to a neck, you play better, it sounds better = respect for the guitar. Regardless of it's tone character.
Like there are different neck sizes. Personally I relate far better to the thicker C-Shape than a Modern C-Shape.
Also that C-Shape has more mass, might just effect the tone too, which coincidentally does sound great.

So much for the gut bucket with the stick neck and the diddley bow attached to the shed wall . . . but, dang that cat can play

A tight fitting neck in the pocket may also be considered a contributing factor.

That's as lightning-quick a Squier has ever been played on record. :D

Agreed to your Squier comment.

BTW, since David Gilmour got mentioned:

Forget all that stuff. The side fret dot inlays, the #4 phillips head screws and the jack cup in any Strat are clearly the dominant factors. Everything else is absolutely and completely irrelevant!

Dude...you are sooooooo wrong! It's the trem cover on the back of the body! That's why I always take mine off...they really deaden the tone!

Ok...ok...ya know what really makes my Strats and even my amp sound better? The Snark tuner clipped on the headstock of the guitar :-)

Snark - Because I got tired of the wife telling me "tune it or die"...

Not sure why SRV was playing a Squier but am guessing that it was modded and played through his usual amps. Although I would be happy to sound like that, it didn't quite sound like what I would expect from SRV. I think I would have noticed the difference even if I hadn't seen Squier on the headstock before clicking on the link although I might have chalked it up to bad room acoustics or the soundman having a bad day.

The guitar is a system, the sum of the parts makes the whole.
Well said. I would add that a very important part in the sum is on the other end of the guitar cable: the amp.

Cheers!

I'll go along with that! After about 30 years of playing acoustic I got my first electric - a Squier Affinity model. Couldn't afford a decent tube amp so used my acoustic amp and it didn't sound very good. Upgraded to a MIM Roadhouse Strat with Texas Specials and it sounded even worse. To the point where if I was forced to sell a guitar to pay the electric bill I would have parted with the MIM since it wasn't getting played anyway. Wasn't till I got a tube amp that the Roadhouse came alive. A good amp made the Squier sound alot better too but the Roadhouse blows it out of the water when tubed. Or in today's world going through a modeling amp instead of a simple SS amp with no digital effects.
