Picked this up in early 2007 at guitar center.

Had/has a couple issues. The factory nut was cut incorrectly (with the e and b strings being to close together) but a pro switched it out for me back in 2010. He also tried to lower the action for me but couldn't get it exactly how he wanted it because he said there was slight neck warp. He even had to fasten the bridge down so no tremolo for me :-(. I've stared at it for ages and I can't see the warp but anyway, its still playable and I can't justify buying a nicer one until I can play better.

What do people generally recommend to do as far as upgrading one of these things?

I think I'd get someone else to look at it.

There still seems to be a lot of height on the saddles to have considered decking the bridge and they seem fairly flat as well.

Perhaps the neck needs shimming.

Nicer guitar! 8)

It is not a 60th Anniversary model, it is a Standard Strat with the badge on the back of the headstock that all MIM Strats had that year. Same for the US made, a few Anniversary models, but all other regular models had the badge.

I had one of those which my wife bought for me brand new in early 2007. I kept it until 2010 when I stupidly got rid of it. To this day I regret it. It was one of the best sounding guitars I had ever had the privilege to both own and play .

Agreed - looks like there is plenty of adjustment left. Looks like they are raised about as high as they will go.

Would suggest either taking it to a different shop or watching some setup videos to learn how to do it.

I agree, get someone else to look at it.

It looks as if the nut slots are not deep enough, and/or too much back bow in the neck. I am just going by the side view, the action is way high, and seems to get higher toward the headstock.

I don't mean to change the subject, but what is the line around the edge of the head stock? I have never noticed it on any other guitars I've seen and mine to not have it.

Yeah, i wondered about that too. Seems like a 2 part but that doesnt make sense, the lines of the wood match so i really wonder how this cut was coming from.

Anyway, that Strat needs a lot of tuning/setup to be a nice one.

The action is way too high. Whats that 5mm? Looks very high to me. Then i hardly remember when i saw a rlief on a photo for the last time, it really seems like a lot relief but that could be the angle too.

Then, all strings are at same height. The strings should form the same radius as the fretboard. So the 2 E-strings are lower as A&B, and the middle ones again higher as all the rest. Just like the fretboard is.

Bring it to a good shop if you want but in my opinion one can easily setup a strat at home too, its not rocket-science. And im a programmer, tools are not really what im familiar with. But all my Strats/Guitars are setup by myself and they are great.

I dont want to brag but tell you that you can do it too :-)

Check this vid and im pretty sure you understand how to setup a Strat.
