I have a 2006 American Deluxe with SCNs and a 2011 American Deluxe with N3s. The SCNs are more Stratty ... it's easier to get "twang" out of them than the N3s. The N3s only sound really "Fendery" when I use my Deluxe Reverb Amp. N3s have a thicker, duller sound.

I would also add, that the original S1 switch wiring in the 2006/SCN American Deluxe is MUCH more useful than the new wiring config in the 2011/N3 American Deluxe. On the 2006 guitar there's a useable sound in every switch position. On the 2011, some of the switch position sounds are a total joke - completely unusable. My opinion.

In a blind test I am pretty sure I would choose the SCNs.

I know one version had the ability to use all three pickups and the neck and bridge together, while another version was all about out of phase/ in phase combonations. Is this correct, or am I off my rocker? If I am currect, which was is which?

You're correct. The wiring on the N3-s in the American Deluxe, with S1 pushed down and the 5 position switch all the way forward, it's 100% TIN CAN.

I used my Am Dlx w/N3's for several years and got some pretty nice sounds from all the positions. Here's the diagram for the switching options if it helps:

Lemme see:
The axe can use each pup individually or in combination into:

1) a clean amp setting
2) one or several chosen EFX settings
3) all available settings

That puts a lot of or little demand on both the axe and the amp. Adding pedals, stomp boxes, and more will add to the choice of tone.

While I'm sure that a preferred sound can come from one's favourite setup, pups included, the chosen genre has as much to do with finding the holy grail of pickups as one's preference in pups, amps and whatnot.

Although, a pup or amp may have a quality and sound that covers many (or more) of the genres well, I doubt that one of whatever will be the answer to fit every situation.

Having said that, the pups, amps, and EFX need to be paired and tweaked to get the maximum result. That said, unless we compare apples to apples we end up with orange juice IMO.

I would not be surprised to hear great sound from both N3s and SCNs as well as terrible tones. I know non noiseless pups can sound great, but to think that they always do, one should only check the racks of equipment, customized electronics, noise gates, and other contributing factors.

Goodbye hum, hello N3s (and SCNs).

Mine is a '10 Am Dlx HSS w/passing lane switch. I didn't realize the SSS wiring was so different. Possibly '10 was a transition year where they made some changes, not sure. I just know the N3's in my guitar were very capable of a wide range of tones if you took the time to tweak some knobs.

I own and like the N3s. I have no experience with the SCN.

The N3s have a bit of a learning curve but with patience and using the knobs on your guitar and amp you can get them to sound excellent. They record beautifully.

The only thing is if you are really hung up on an "authentic" tone, I don't think that's what the N3s are about. They get close but they do sound different than vintage-style single coils. I don't let this bother me anymore. Playing at low volumes on small practice amps, in our own styles and with our own skill sets, we're never going to sound exactly like SRV or Clapton anyway.

This is what my N3 neck pickup sounds like:

This is the video that inspired me to leave them in my strat and not swap them out:

Good observation...both of them were alright but I always wanted more...too tame for me

The esteemed luthier & forum member martian guided me on my last build...

...with a simple P/P switch for "Bridge On"
...re-fretting the Clapton Neck
...and...to maximize the Clapton Mid Boost...

...DiMarzio single coil size Humbuckers...Area 67-58-61...(great advice martian)

ABSOLUTELY NO NOISE - NO HISS

...they are huge sounding if you want...can be dialed in from Stratty Jangle to Big 'Bucker Power Chords and Leads as fat as you need...

...they make puny pedals sound better...and look like vintage Fender pickups w/ beveled poles...I'm a cheerleader now

Nice. I'm noticing they get a lot of love around here.

Off the shelf there's the Fender Custom Shop Fusion Classic Strat. I do like this demo. It made me run
home and learn "Liar" when I saw it.

That's the one...helped convince me...Areas 61-58-67 used in the CS Fusion Classic guitar...thanks

The Clapton Mid Boost amplifies any hiss from your rig...and...as martian says...(i think)...

"The Mids are the BALLS of your sound!"

It was martian or someone equally famous who stated that
