Way back in 1993, I purchased my very first Strat, a stripped to wood and stained golden brown, '87 Strat Plus with rosewood fretboard.

Now I own a the latest Deluxe Strat, the Plus model with the very versatile and useful "personality" cards.

Even through the Strat Plus was discontinued, I see the Deluxe series as the direct descendant, and next step the evaluation, of the Strat Plus.

Am I way off base on this? Thoughts?

I guess I've always considered the "regular" American Deluxe series to be the successors to the Lace Sensor models as they were the replacements. But I also see where they didn't necessarily push the envelop quite like the Lace Sensor models did when they were introduced; the American Deluxes were more of an effort to walk back a bit from the Strat Plus et. al. and be more acceptable to those who didn't like Lace Sensors but retaining the other "high performance" parts (locking tuners, roller nut on some models, etc.). I know that Fender was ending their relationship with Lace, but you have to wonder if the models with Laces were selling better if they wouldn't have renewed the agreement. The American Deluxe Strat Plus pushes the envelop and is more of a spiritual successor to the original Lace Sensor models.

I think time will tell if this Deluxe Strat Plus model is a permanent addition to the lineup or if it gets discontinued after a couple of years, turning it into an interesting development. For example, my local Guitar Center has 2 of the HSS models that have been hanging on the wall for over 6 months, but the one and only SSS model (in that same blue color as yours) they got in sold quickly.
