end up with an amp that behaves like it has about 5 or 6 watts.

Which is still LOUD - of course, it all depends on the size of the OP's home and the tolerance level of the family.
I've a new toy(/garnish?), a Mooer 5W, which I've so far only tested, but with a 2x12 it sure wouldn't be my recommendation to solve the problem.

In my opinion modeling amps are the worst sounding amps ever.

I've played the Mustang, THR5 and of course the "industry standard", MicroCube. Soundwise they're not Trainwrecks, but they're absolutely not trainwrecks, either. IMHO.

+1 I've had a Micro Cube for some time now. It's really perfect for home practice. It's quiet enough. The tone is good enough for that, but tone snobs need not apply. My DRRI is for when I feel snobbish.

A Line 6 POD and some headphones sounds sweet (stereo) and doesn't bother anyone. I have the POD XT and the only use it sees, is for quiet practice with headphones.

Por favor, disculpe mi español, no se llega a la práctica con mucha frecuencia.

sounds like a situation where the problem isn't the amp but as mentioned, not wanting to bother people around you.

Don't know how ya fix that... gift certificate to a mall once a week???

I have a bunch of amps, among them two mustangs, I like what they can do but they are not for everyone

The least expensive option is a overdrive pedal of your choice. I use a BD2 & it sounds perfectly fine IMO. It gives me the grit I want at sane volumes.

But I am tired of throwing my money away on crap pedals. Is it that hard to find fat creamy smooth transparent overdrive? Lol!

The smoothest overdrive pedal I've tried is the Mad Professor Golden Cello. I doubt that I'll ever sell mine. Plus it has delay, so you get a nice solo pedal with one button push.

I have the same amp/issue, minus the family....The neighbors are fair during the daytime, but I really want to push the amp to the 10 level just to see the difference between my usual 2-6 range.

I recommend talking to a few of those techs in your area to get their opinions and estimates.
1. Wattage selector mod.
2. Speaker swap

Since you've already thrown cash at pedals w/o achieving the overdriven sound you want...

This question comes up quite a bit and I honestly don't know what to advise sometimes. I feel truly sorry for folks who aren't allowed to play their guitars at a sane volume (which means loud and ballsy, not castrated and puny) for fear of the wrath of family members. It's got to be a horrible predicament to be in, having to chose between the people you love and the hobby/music/art you love. You're caught between a rock and a hard place. I am not faced with that decision but if I were I know I would choose family and give up the (electric) guitar because I could never in a million years give up the tone and feel and sheer musicality of playing through a good amp when it's dialed into the sweet spot. Some headphone amp or some cheap 0.5 watt ultra-low-noise, no-tone, no balls, schmuck of an emasculated amp would be torture for me. I'd rather not play electric at all and just stick to acoustic.

I have to admit to some level of admiration for those who have to tread these waters but they also have my pity. If it was just a wife and there were no kids yet I'd ditch her at the first sign because if she loves you she will let you do what you need to do. Any woman who can't respect her husband's needs is not worth the air she breathes. That said, once there are kids involved they have to come first.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Late on this one, but have you tried any tube powered pedals, i'm om 1/4 watt setting vox ac4 with à Blackstar ht drive in front, best bet is to line à few up at your local store and try them out against each other, the HT drive is à different beastie from most of the others I tried, smooth, creamy and harmonic luciousness
