I'm a diehard stratocaster fan I also have a stock 2013 Fender 65 Deluxe reverb reissue. I love the clean head room on this amp but I'm looking to get a great overdriven sound at home with out busting the wife and kids eardrums. I know the best tone is to just overdrive my amp and when I crank it up to 5 or 6 it sounds great, just not for home use. I know my options are either a pedal a attenuator or to install a wattage selector. I'd just like to hear opinions on what my best options are before I spend the money.

Headphones
Smaller (modeling) amp for home practice

But to get serious.
At least THD, Koch, Weber all make good attenuators. But don't buy any of them based on anyone's opinion in the web. Your own ears are the only valid gager.

In my opinion modeling amps are the worst sounding amps ever. Even for home practice but that's just my opinion.

I find the Peavey Classic 30 or Blues Jr are great for getting a good overdrive tone.

Look at a Cab Clone by Mesa. I use one when my daughter studies. Use the XLR out - the 1/4 inch is meh.

Overdrive?
Blues?
Tone?
You will not be happy with a headphone preamp.

Why not try replacing your 8☊ speaker with a 16 ☊?
Maybe one with early breakup?

The least expensive option is a overdrive pedal of your choice. I use a BD2 & it sounds perfectly fine IMO. It gives me the grit I want at sane volumes.

Please do not imply that anything above bedroom level is insane.

Thank you.

My Blackheart amp has a switch to cut out a power tube. 7 watts with one or 15 with 2. Good tone at low levels with one power tube.

Have a pair of Vox headphones with built in effects that work out nice too.

I was thinking of having a wattage selector installed into my drri but idk if I will be happy with the sound or how much it will cost me. I live close to Nashville so I know I can find a good tech.

I have used a BD2 I was not happy with the tone it reminded me of the ehx soul food I had. Just thin and harsh. I've also played with the little big muff, boss od, fulltone od I was not happy with those pedal either. I want to try the ts808 or the ts9. Possibly the wampler delta od or even the xotic ep booster or the sl drive. But I am tired of throwing my money away on crap pedals. Is it that hard to find fat creamy smooth transparent overdrive? Lol!

If you think the BD2 is thin & harsh you might want to give the tube screamers a miss. IMO they're thinner & harsher. Even the Wampler Clarksdale is the least creamy od he makes. Personally I think I would love that one. But if you want smooth & creamy try the Wampler Euphoria pedal. It's even got a smooth setting. But if you've gone through so many pedals maybe they're not for you. good luck. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp7U_tjE2Zg

Glad you got it worked out - gotta keep the family happy! I don't have a wife to worry about but the kids do complain sometimes when I crank it up a bit. That's why I like my Vox headphones. They have built-in modeling and I can turn it up without bothering anyone. Just have to keep a supply of batteries!

I've owned several amps with half power switches. They pretty much do exactly what you would expect them to do. They remove a little bit of clean head room and along with it some girth in the bottom end. Exactly what you would expect when comparing two amps of differing output power. Combined with the speaker swap I previously mentioned you should expect to end up with an amp that behaves like it has about 5 or 6 watts.
