Okies...this one's for you pickup aficionados out there. A guy in my area has a setup of Strat pickups listed on Craigslist for $30...says they're Tex/Mex. Seems like a reasonable price, however the question is how the devil can I tell if they're actually Tex/Mex pickups? Obviously it's just the pickups...no box or anything...and I'm not really sure I could tell these from stock MIM pickups or even something out of a Squier by visual inspection alone.

Thoughts?

You could ask the seller if he/she would be willing to let you try them out for a week and if not, move on.

Or you could ask what guitar they came out of. It might help a little. But for $30.00 it's probably worth a shot anyway.

I have a Texas Special that I took apart to verify it's authenticity and I took pictures of the pickups. Mostly because they sounded so much better than my strat Squier. Maiin thing to see is the heavy wire that Fender uses on the Special Texas and probably other higher end pickups. It will be black and white and have a woven cloth texture to the insulation.

If it is not cloth type wire and has the thin plastic hookup wire that attaches to the switch, then it is probably NOT Fender or of any good quality.

I wish I knew how to email a pic of these pickups on this BB???

Post pictures here, and someone can probably identify them. They will have yellow and black wires for the bridge, red and black wires for the mid and white and black wires for the neck (not cloth covered). The stagger on the pole pieces will be traditional, not at all like a MIM Std or Squier. They will also have numbers written on the back.

Yep I just installed a set they look just like the old american standard pickups. Sound pretty good too.

Thanks for the info. The guy has only had just the 1 pic posted...and it's a pretty flat over-head shot, so I can't even tell if the pole pieces are staggered or not (and no pics of the backs to indicated any markings). Here's the listing...

https://cleveland.craigslist.org/msg/4888697933.html

Not really a lot to go on there at all. The guy has had these posted for a couple of months now...not a big surprise in and of itself since I'm having trouble selling gear lately...however that along with the lack of info and the single poor picture makes me a bit skeptical.

Mostly I'm just trying to decide if this is really worth wasting any time or effort over.

Again...thanks!

The pole pieces do indeed seem to be staggered and the lead-ins have the correct insulation color. For thirty bucks it might be a good deal but be sure to take a DVM with you to check for any open coils.

If they sound like overdriven cheese, then they're Tex/Mex - just my opinion, of course. You might love them.

Aside from the subjective nature of the comment, it's an older thread and the Craigslist posting has long since been removed...I ended up buying a volume pedal instead.

Realize the thread is old, but just for reference...

The resistance values of the Tex Mex pups on my '99 Nashville Telecaster Deluxe are:

Neck - 6.0k Ω

Middle (Strat) - 6.4k Ω

Bridge - 8.0k Ω

As mentioned a check w/ a DVM will allow you to know.

The Strat Neck/Bridge might vary, but I doubt it.

cheers!

Sorry for my earlier comment, but I have tried them and they just sounded like a Wal-Mart "Starcaster" to me. Something about TexMex pick-up tone just does speak to me at all. There's nothing special going on.

- was that subjective or what? LOL
