I'm looking for a cheap, but good sounding guitar that I can use when I go to college, without taking much of a loss if it gets damaged or stolen and I was wondering if this would be a good deal. Also, I was looking at a MIJ E Series Stratocaster that I could get for approximentaly $350. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fender-vintage-85-Squier-Stratocaster-Japan-/261790053735?pt=Guitar&hash=item3cf3e73567
So, which guitar out of the two is the better deal?

The Fender MIJ for 450 is not bad. They are very good guitars.

The price seems pretty fair. By the way, where are you from? If you live in the Baltimore/D.C. area, you should check out Atomic Music, in Beltsville. It's a giant used guitar shop. Ask for Louise. He's a fair and descient guy.

Well....I clicked on the one on ebay, and it says "sold"....so I guess if those were your two choices, someone has made the choice for you. Either would be a fair deal in my opinion.

Guitars made in Japan are very well made, and the 'Quality Control' is MUCH better than what Squire is currently letting out of the factory in Indonesia.
I am done with Indonesian born guitars. Though I know how to do a COMPLTETE set-up (including file frets)...I don't feel like the low price is worth it any more. You'd think if Fender where gonna stick their name on an instrument, they'd care to address the Quality Control department over there.

I understand, you get what you pay for. I also understand that, in order to offer a decent "start-up" price on these guitars some costs have to be saved...but not in the Quality Control department.

My 2011 Squire Standard Telecaster needed EVERYTHING done out-of-box just to make it playable.
My 2013 CD-60 Acoustic was pretty good (aside from sharp fret edges), but the stain on the back was really messed up, like the spray gun clogged and the guitar kept rolling on down the line.
In my opinion, these guitars should have never made it out of the factory.

Mexico has really, really come a long way. They are very nicely made guitars...and if I can not afford American, that is where my money is.

Sorry for the rant, and not trying to take over the thread....but it has been weighing on my mind.

I'm in Baltimore too, but somehow missed the C/L listing for that MIJ 60th Anniversary Stratocaster. I was recently in the market for another Strat, and if I hadn't traded a faded series LP for a '97 American Standard (guess who thinks he got the better end of that deal!) last month I'd be all over that guitar, especially for that price. The build quality of the Japanese Fenders is first rate, tho' not all are crazy about the p/ups. Generally they are a significant step up from the Mexican Fenders, and many are on par with their American counterparts. Go play it, and if you like it offer the guy $400, and I bet you walk away with it.
