The more expensive bodys are center seamed they use them for clear and semi transparent finished. Painted bodys are multiple pieces glue together and you can not see the grain so they are not worried about book matching of the wood.

funny I was just sitting here thinking how I would love to stand there all day and buff Strat bodies, just day dreaming about who would be playing them and the music they would make while they "lived" out their lives as guitars.

really man it would just be so much better than my job now !!!!!

people think what I do is cool, I would leave it in a minute to be a Fender employee.

Ha-ha - good!

But just ask that Fender buffing dude. I bet he'd tell you he hates buffing; he just wants to play the beggars. Or maybe he ain't even into guitars, it's just a job that pays. How sad would that be?

Do anything all day long for a job, it looses it's sparkle. Like Hunter Thompson said: old ladies of disrepute don't do much giggling.

(I rephrased that for the benefit of the Fender censor software...)

Thanks a lot, Orvilleowner: excellent contribution.

I can't take credit for the pictures in that Two-Factory Tour. They weren't mine, though I wish I could have been on those tours. There are a couple such photo-tours on the web, but this one is the most recent I found (and I think it is the best, most complete).

Google and you'll find some other older photo-tours. Cheers, guys!

I think the Deluxe MIMs, like the Deluxe Players Strat and the Deluxe Powerhouse Strat, are terrific guitars and very underrated. I love my Inca Silver Powerhouse.

from my little understanding of wood a one piece body or slab would be much less stable than a two or three piece one.

it would be prone to warpage.

That is exactly correct the cut or cuts make the body more stable and stronger. If you were to apply pressure to the from or back of a strat body until it breaks, it will break along the grain and not the glue line (assuming it is a good gluing.

I hear people talk about the one piece solid body as if it is great, personally I would stay away from such a guitar if there are manufactures out there offering them.

I've got a couple *old* strats with one-piece bodies.

There's been no problem at all! Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen any guitar with warped or split bodies ... don't fool yourself, a two-piece body could also warp or split ... if the wood was crummy enough.

I won't try to hype the one-piece bodies as having any magical sonic properties, except for cosmetic beauty.

I have heard on a few occasions that you do not want to buy a MIM over the web because of finishes and fit. Since I've only played a few in the stores, I have to say that most sounded good and the ones that didn't were mostly due to the arrangement pick-up that was offered. The two stores I most commonly shop are known for returning any guitar that does not meet their standards. All guitars are unboxed, inspected and set-up.

The web stores on the other hand do not all unbox and inspect. For those of you that own or have owned MIMS purchased off the web, do you think there is any basis to the suggestion to avoid web purchases of MIMS?

Elderly Instruments opens and sets up all there guitars before they ship them out. They use this as a selling point to compete with the big net stores.

I really have to get up to elderly, I have heard many good things about them and not one negative and they are only about an hour away.

as for the buffing cracks, ya I know I left myself open for a few wise cracks there LOL
