from 2006 to present MIM strats are made
with the same wood that most american strats are made of.

I know that in 2000 doing a dealers education tour people were shown each of the factorys starting in Ensenada then Corona and at that time all bodys and necks were rough made a the Corona factory. After they are made they decide if the wood it good for a painted body or a natural or trasparent finsh. They then sent the bodys and necks to the appropriate place to be finished and assembled (Corona, Ensenada, Custom shop) It all depends on the look of the wood after rough as to who get it. Tranparent finish bodies have the better looking wood no matter were it comes from as opposed to painted bodies which hide the grain and any dicoloration in the wood.

The necks are pretty good. They used to be made in the US, but I believe that they are now made in Mexico. Check out this 2006 photo-factory-tour:

That kind of how I remember things but it looks as though the necks arrive there rough cut and ready to be shaped and sanded ,freted and so on. The way thing are now days you know that both locations operate very closely together for shear economic reason. Just makes good bussiness sence to do so. For fender to stay a leader they not only have to make good products but they have to do it economical.

Just to reiterate what I was saying on another thread: that really is a great post. TONS of stuff to look at in those pics, and many questions answered.

The only bit I wasn't finding was the shaping of the back of the neck. No doubt, another CNC machine, but not pictured, I think?

Loved the robot fret slot cutter - I want one of those!

Thanks a lot, Orvilleowner: excellent contribution.

Awesome factory tour! The multipart bodies in the Mexican Fenders save a lot of money because big enough pieces of wood for U.S.-style construction are expensive. Per Fender here on this site, the bodies of U.S.-made Fenders such as the Highway One usually are 2-3 pieces of wood, which is how it's always been. Your 2006 picture explains some of the difference in "unplugged" tone and weight between my Highway One and Squier. The Highway One is very light and resonant in comparison.

I don't think any regular models come with one-piece bodies.

The Custom Shop will make one-piece bodied guitars as special orders.

from my little understanding of wood a one piece body or slab would be much less stable than a two or three piece one.

it would be prone to warpage.

I believe what most guitar perfection seekers look for a two piece body with an offset seam (not right down the middle) for maximum tone and stability of the wood.
