Hi guys,
This is my 1st post & I'm glad to be here.I'm a great fan of fender guitars.I've played on a lot of Strats & owned one until it got stolen.Anyways I wasn't too happy about that Strat though, as it had a hard touch on the neck.Well now I'm looking for the right Fender that would stay for life.
The first thing I would look in a guitar is it's neck/fret feel. Some guitars sound great but don't make the playing EZ or smooth. My fingers are smaller to the average American. I used to play an Eric Clapton signature Strat borrowed from a friend.I just loved the feel of it.The smaller fret wires were great for gliding & they pretty good for bending strings too although the neck felt a little fat. This was a guitar purchased in the late 80s I guess & the 9s I put on it felt very easy to play on.The newer Claptons don't feel anywhere near to it.Do you think they must have changed the measurements in the newer ones or are they the same? I did a play a few other starts after that but there was one that really impressed me.It was a 50th anniversary Stratocaster. It had 10s on it & I changed it to 9s.had a fat neck feel but my fingers just flew.It could scream with harmonics & with 9s the bends were so easy.I liked this guitar for its playability & sound, although they didn't sound good for crunch or power chords.Does anyone know what pickups they used on it & if I can atleast purchase those pups although the sale on this guitar is closed? I would also like to know if any other fender strat carries the same type of neck measurements. Overall I would like a sleek neck that are good for speed & bends.
I heard a lot about the Jeff beck fenders but never got to try one. Most stores don't carry these special signature guitars.I live in DC.If some one can tell me a store where I could find signature fenders like this Jeff Beck or mark knofler so I can try it out it would be great.
I'm a great fan of Mark knofler.Does anyone know what pups he uses on his fender? many of these guitars are available online from online stores. If these stores have a show room nearby,I could go there & play it for myself & decide on the best fender for myself.Any input on my questions would be much appreciated.Thanks.

Hey Jesuscares! I am glad u r a fan of fender! i have a squire strat and it is my 1st electric guitar. i love the feel of it but that is just me. i guess it depends on the feel u r most comfortable w/. if u want the les paul feel, i would try a telecaster. i'm not a huge fan o' the tele though. i would much rather pick up a strat. although i am a big fan o' gibson les pauls though 2. it's what ever u feel the most comfortable w/. tell me if u have any questions!

Good luck and rock on! racha :D 8)

Even within the same model, necks can feel different. I'm sorry to say, but you really need to just play as many as you can to find the neck that feels best to you. Also, when trying those guitars, try to use an amp that's very similar to your own. This way you have a better idea of what it will sound like once you get your baby home. It's just so hard to tell someone that this or that guitar will definately do it for ya.

Whats up with you guys? Can't you let a fender forum member have his nick the way he wants to? I asked a question about fender guitars & not who Jesus was!

What's this about? Go away.

Above points are correct - and it doesn't matter what brand we're talking about. I made the mistake once (because money was burning a hole in my pocket and I just had to have a Les Paul) of buying the first axe I pulled down because I liked its look. Never again. Play 'em, play 'em, play 'em until you find the one that talks to you. Pay no attention to the salesman/shopkeeper who can't stand looking at you or listening to you anymore.

I agree with a few here - play em, play em, play em, and when you are done, play em again. When it comes to feel and tone, you have to decide. Someone might suggest one or more to look at, but ultimately it's you that has to be pleased. When you check them out, try to play through an amp that is the same as yours or close to yours. If you use a small amp, bring it to the store with you. Take a friend and have them play it and you stand back and listen.

Amen. I think jadeandjonah have violated the forum's code of conduct and I hate to see this place turn into another Harmony Central.

Anyway, Jesuscares, you are right in looking at the 50th Anniversary. I have the American Deluxe and it is my absolute favorite Strat to play right now. This is compared to my MIJ Contemporary Strat with Fralins Blues Specials, a 40th Anniversary limited run MIA, and a VG Strat.

The neck is as you describe with the satin finish and the rolled fingerboard edges, and in my opinion, is what makes this guitar so special. The pickups are the Samarium Cobalt Noiseless (SCN's) and there is an S-1 switch that allows the pickups to be played in parallel or series. When the S-1 is active, I notice that it has more bite and power than normal. It's a warmer tone that is almost like having humbuckers. I am able to use the bridge pickup a lot more often with this switch. The switch also allows you to play all three pickups at a times, something that the normal configuration won't do. I don't care too much for this tone, which is quite mellow, but a jazz player might groove on it.

Right now, the only ones you will find are used ones since they stopped making them in early 2005. I've seen a few on the 'bay. If you like the neck, make sure you're looking for the American or American Deluxe versions. However, the SCN's with S-1 are only on the American Deluxe. The current line of American Deluxes are very similar in features but without the gold hardware and commemorative details. The new 2008 American Standards look very nice too and are priced lower than the artist signature models. It all depends on what your budget is.

If I may, there are a couple of other sites that are very informative, http://www.fenderforum.com/ and Strat-Talk.com. If you want info from Christians, go to http://www.christianmusicianradio.com/ (real smart guys here with primo gear) or http://www.christianguitar.org/forums/. The Fender site's cool, but they shut down at 10 pm and I live on the West Coast, so I need more time.

I'd agree with that, regarding the S-1 switch, but I'm coming at it from the other direction, cos warm jazzy sounds are more and more my thing. After some initial experimentation, I found I never used the S-1 that came with my American Series - except for that all-pickups-on setting. It gives a big, round, full kind of a sound that's nice to go to for a lead passage when you want an alternative to the full out agression of the bridge position. Sort of a clean-boost-plus option.

I wouldn't buy a particular instrument just to get that S-1, though. If you found you wanted three coils together a small toggle switch mod would achieve the same thing on any Strat.
