I just got a new Am Std HH Strat, Olympic White, Maple neck, from Sweetwater today. I waited for the temperature to acclimate before opening, and as usual with Sweetwater, it was perfect out of the box.

I have only spent a very few minutes playing, using my new amp while swapping tubes, trying to find the right combination, but so far the guitar sounds sweet. The pups are very ballsy, great note separation and a balanced sound, so you can hear each string clearly when playing chords. With the amp set for clean sound, the cleans are nice and full with a rich sound and clear highs. With the gain on the amp turned up a little, the distortion is smooth and still clear enough, very responsive to pick attack. The pups look nearly the same as those on the Blacktop, but these Twin Head sound quite different so far. The Blacktop pups are much darker, the Blacktop neck being almost too muddy/dark. Although the controls on this new Strat are a bit unfamiliar, a volume for each pup, a master tone, and a three-way switch with no coil splitting, I think that I can get used to it.

I will try it with different amps over the next few days and see how it works with each. I am thinking that it will be great with a high gain amp like the Blackstar, or even with the MB TA, and am anxious to hear it with the DR. So far with this new (mystery) amp, I can tell that the Strat is a winner, and I can't wait to try it out some more.

I'll report later after trying different amps, but until then, some pics. Oh yeah, it looks good too! :D

Beautiful humbucker beast, nice purchase! :P

Funny to understand the reasons Fender came up with two volumes, a master tone and a 3-way pickup switch; perhaps to compete with the Gibson Explorer which utilises such control layout. :|

Maybe both pickups are wound the same and needed separate controls so you don't have volume drop when switching to the bridge? Was Gibson's reasoning for awhile. Seems like Gretsch was doing the same - identical pickups in neck and bridge. Since strings don't vibrate as much near the bridge you need to compensate with either separate volume control or hotter bridge pickup. Or readjust the volume every you switch to the other pickup.

According to the specs, the bridge pup has AlNiCo 5 magnets and the neck pup has AlNiCo 2.

There goes that theory! I can't think of another.

Well, you were on the right track. Plus, with two separate volumes, and the pup selector switch in the middle (both pups), you can blend the two pups in different ways. With both pups selected, and both volumes cranked, the sound is real "chirpy".

If you cut the volume of one pickup entirely you can use the selector switch to do that "kill switch" effect.

Never thought about that, but yes, that would work.

I recently had a similar experience with Sweetwater when I purchased my Mystic Ice Blue Strat Deluxe Plus (SSS) through them.

The packing was great, with great instructions for helping the guitar settle into the room temperature. The sales people were very helpful and very considerate to my shipping requests.

Good luck with the new guitar.

Very nice indeed, congrats. I like the way Sweetwater sends pictures of the actual guitar you buy. :)
