Inserts, wood or brass, seem like a lot of work. Over the years, with 14 Fenders, I've only had one screw strip out. Wooden toothpicks and yellow wood glue in the hole fixed that problem right up.

No, They are quite easy to install. For less than $10 for parts, 30 minutes max to mark the holes, measure, drill out for the inserts , install and reassemble the body and neck.
Once the holes in the neck heel are drilled out to the inserts shaft radius ( minus the threads ) the self tapping inserts are fitted in. then it is just fitting the neck back in the pocket and inserting the new fine thread screws thru the plate / neck and into the inserts.

This results in a superior connection since the fine threads are all engaged in the inserts, unlike the previous wood screws which are tapered and as they are installed, removed and reinstalled, continually pull outward and only the larger threads going out of the neck can now only grip.
The machine screws in the inserts are a square thread design so thread grip is constant throughout the length embedded in the inserts.
I'll see if I can link up to my build page to illustrate.

John Sims & 53magnatone make good points from the skilled Wood worker/Guitar player and builder perspective

...inserts are a stronger join and wear much better :!:

...do they mute vibrations (cosmic..astrological &/or physical) :?:

53mag...that link would be much appreciated.

but many players don't have the skills/tools/confidence to properly install them.

It makes me think more carefully about taking the neck off my Strats in the future...

Personally...I like the idea of inserts...but what materials....Brass...Steel...Plutonium?

The quality inserts we use are made of brass. There are different types made from various metals and are machined to grip differently ( particle board / soft wood / hardwood / MDF panels )

These are inserted in the Telepartster neck ( walnut telepartster build project )

Here below you can see 2 are inserted and also the original screw holes in the neck have been enlarged for the inserts.
In order to drill perpendicular to the neck, I cradle the neck heel in between two square blocks, clamp them to the heel sides and thus it keeps the neck heel joining face to the body horizontal and I can drill with the press at 90 degrees.

The inserts are installed with the drill press by hand. This allows me to pressure downward and spin the insert into its neck hole correctly.

This is the link to my build thread ( which is in this Stratocaster section ) I am missing some pictures of more detailed install so it could be on another one of my build threads. I'll have to confirm but in any case I am going to update the insert / screw thing-ama-jig-gy in the next couple days. Currently cutting out the back plates and returning to the neck fastening is next.
