I'm looking to buy a strat off from a guy in my area for £115, He's listed it on a local music instrument for sale or swap page and he listed it as a "1996 Fender Stratocaster 50th Anniversary Squire Guitar & Case (Yako China)", the serial number is YN637853

I'm confused whether he's listing it as a Fender or a Squier, hes a photo of the headstock

heres the body

and heres the back of the headstock with the fender 50th anniversary sticker

If anybody could give any details on this guitar it'd be much appreciated, thank you.

Hi jobcian,

Yeah, a Squier with a fake decal. I wouldn't give my money to anyone that is selling a fake.

So, you're saying it's a genuine fake?

If you buy this, then you are the person P. T. Barnum was talking about.

The seller is being just a little bit economical with the truth!

There doesn't seem to be anything genuine about it - best ignored.

I am saying that no Squier ever came with that decal. The decal was added to the guitar after it left the factory. The seller might claim that he doesn't know, but I know that it is a fake.

On top of everything else I don't think Fender was making guitars in China in 1996.

They had to use 1996 in order for it to pretend to be a 50th Ann. Considering that there is no reference on the product dating page to a "YN" prefix for serial numbers, and the fact of a fake decal, we can't even trust that the year is correct, or that the serial number is even real.

This is parts-o-caster made with lots of aftermarket, non-Fender parts.

It looks like a complete factory Squier with a fake decal, and maybe a different pick guard.

Why would a Squier have a Fender decal...?

I'd pass. (I'd pass based on the look of it alone, but that's just me.)

Most '96 Made in China (not "Crafted" in China) Affinities have the s/n etched into the neck plate - possibly NC6XXX or CY6XXX indicating factory and date. All '96-'98 Affinities had 8-hole pickguards and none came in that horrid red pickguard, speaking purely OEM. Some of the Affinities (exactly the same parts as the then contemporaneous "Bullets") had a plastic trim piece under and around the neck plate. None had a Fender decal - all had Squier decals with Fender in simple block uppercase letters under the Squier, and the only thing on the headstock ball was Affinity.

With that said, the original bodies were 1.75" alder - two- or three-piece - and the necks were fast and appreciated by many "Fender" lovers. I've mod two and they are unbelievably good guitars after changing the tuners, pickups, and pots/caps. I can't fault Fender for using cheaper electronic and hardware components when the bodies and necks were this good. One quirky feature were the string trees, which were of a heavier gauge steel than anything you can now buy and are the same "double U" shape as '50s trees, not a softer, flatter "W" shape as those that are now and have been available on Strats and Teles since the mid-'60s.

The guitar usually sells for between $50 and $100 in pawn shops and on eBay. I bought one on eBay for $25 because it had some big chips and was covered with stickers (I stripped and repainted it so no prob for me). Get it for half the asking and you might have a worthwhile purchase. Ignore the faking and dressing-up attempts. It's a Fender, but not that kind of Fender, if you know what I mean.

Fender made Squiers in China. (That period mean period! as in fact) Squier was string company that Fender bought, and used the Squier name to introduce entry-level Fender guitars to the US and world markets. Some were made in Korea or Japan in addition to China and later in Indonesia. Made in China were superior to Crafted in China. Japanese Strats are the most sought after Asian guitars - at one time were better than US made Strats. I have a suspicion that the mid-'90s Squier bodies were of Japanese origin. The necks were also very good but the MIC has no skunk stripe and a crude truss rod hole. After all, rosewood fretboards on maple necks don't need skunk stripes and were added only to make customers feel they were getting a more upscale neck.
