Installed all the components of an American Deluxe 50th Anniversary Strat - S-1 switch, tone control, no load tone control, and 5 position super switch using Fender Lace sensors (three wire).

I initially wired it up using the Fender wiring diagram. When I tap tested, everything worked fine with the S-1 in the up position, but not all pickups worked in the down position. Unfortunately, I didn't record which ones didn't work, though I suspect it was only the middle pickup.
I de-soldered the 5 way and rewired using a different drawing, but it still doesn't work correctly. Everything works great except for the middle pup. Please refer to the following images:

This is what I'm supposed to have:

The Fender service diagram for the 50th Anniversary American Deluxe Stratocaster I used for the initial installation is located here: http://www2.fender.com/support/articles/?section=downloads&category=stringed-instruments-service-diagrams

This is the diagram I used to get where I am now:

Since all the pickups work in some fashion or another, I'm sure my soldering isn't the culprit. It seems like it's got to be a problem with the 5 way configuration, but I really don't understand the 5 way enough to visualize how it makes its connections. I did suspect the center pickup might be wired incorrectly, but on both diagrams, the center pickup has (in this case) the white and green wires grounded to a pot case and the orange wire attached to the S-1 switch.

Suggestions are most appreciated.

Since some of the configurations with the S1 switch pushed in, have the middle pup in series, then the negative lead of the middle pup should not be grounded, but connected in the circuit.

I get an error when I click the link for the Fender diagram "404 Not Found".

I've pondered that very thing, but can't for the life of me figure out where else it should be connected. Keeping in mind that Fender's own wiring diagram shows their noiseless pickups wired exactly the same way. Every diagram I can find on the internet shows the same configuration.
I even removed everything and started over from scratch. Magnified the Fender wiring diagram 250x and followed it exactly. Examined every solder joint, too. I'm confident I installed everything the way Fender says to install it. Every single thing works exactly as it should except for the middle pickup with the S-1 switch down. The only thing I can think of left is to try another S-1 switch (I guess I could have gotten a bad one) or contact Fender directly and hope they can help me out with this.
I've spent 3 days on this wiring and am completely baffled...

Hi there you should be able to test the switch. Each middle dot either connects to left or right (or up or down) depending on how the switch is engaged.
Check this with an ohm meter.
Assume nothing.

Could you post detailed photos of your wiring ... sometimes a second pair of eyes can help.
Check carefully around the bottom terminals where the mid connects to make sure you do not have a short to the opposing earth on the switch.
At a quick glance Andy's diagram looks ok but the tone control wirings seem different than Fenders ... this may be for a reason and I would be surprised if he got it wrong for the situation intended.
:D

I thought about testing the switch, but since I currently have strep throat, I found it difficult to face the routine of de-soldering and re-soldering one more time. So I simply buttoned it all up and finished the assembly. I'm thinking I may just order another S-1 switch and super switch and start from scratch. I didn't take any pictures while I had it open, so I have none to post. I know how common it is for guys to post asking for help and swear that they checked and rechecked their wiring, only to find a connection missed or adjacent lugs shorted together. And while I won't say it couldn't ever happen to me, I was once a certified micro/miniature solder repair tech, and do retain some of that skill set.
Quite frankly, between the two, I'd put my money on Andy's diagram being the most likely to be correct. Fender's drawing left off the jack connection and misspelled 'terminals'.

Howdy!

This looks suitably intriguing! :D

Firstly, I can confirm the diagram is correct (for what it's worth I've used it several times myself without issue)

Secondly, the fact that the in the off position things seem to be working as intended is a good sign. So before you order any replacement parts, I'd recommend testing the specials cap on the S-1 switch. If that's duff, a replacement cap "could" be all you need to get things working (no promises though!).

Lastly. Regarding the series wiring. In this case we are joining the Middle (+) to the Neck or Bridge (-) so the signal flows through the Neck or Bridge (+) and out the Middle (-) , if that helps (drawing it on a bit of paper makes it look a lot simpler than it sounds!)

Best of luck!

Andy

Thanks for posting. I was hoping you'd weigh in on it. I just happen to have an extra cap, so my next opportunity I'll strip everything back down and start over using your drawing (and a new cap) exclusively.

Hey Andy hows the cat.
The diagram you did for kidderman appears to have T1 for the neck and mid and T2 for the bridge. Would that be correct?
That's how it looks to me hence the slight difference between your drawing and Fenders when it comes to the tone config... :D

Hi Wrvond,

No problem, you got lucky! I haven't been here in a while, but this weekend I was asked to solve an issue with a Yamaha Pacifica (first bit of work I've done on a guitar in ages), So I came here for some inspiration, only to find the forums had a facelift and all the links I've saved to handy posts on wiring trouble shooting no longer work...

Anyhoo, I honestly can't think of anything else that could be causing your issue. You're much more experienced with soldering than I am, so if the cap isn't the issue the following might help you diagnose the problem:

Hi Jimmy,

Sadly, after 15 years of truly memorable companionship, we had to say goodbye to Randel the Cat at the end of August last year. :(

You are correct and should award yourself 50 points! :D

Enjoy!

Andy

Sorry to hear about Randel.
I know what great animals they are. I am sure he will be offering technical assistance in that great gig in the sky.

With the help of this forum I've successfully upgraded my American Standard to have the S-1 switch. Thanks to Andy and everyone for sharing their knowledge.

I've been comparing the S1-On Position 2 and 4 (which is Middle + SC). I'm using an Orange Drop .047 and the tone is really close to the middle pick-up only. I was hoping for something more unique. Any recommendations for another capacitor. Has anyone else done this comparison?

Also curious how this compares to the updated Deluxe wiring which has out-of phase as an option?
