I bought a John Mayer Stratocaster. It was one of the last two before my dealer running out and with Mayer leaving Fender my dealer had no plans of getting any more in. I am no expert but am pretty good at setting up my guitars. I have done so with my 1988 USA Strat as well as my Eric Johnson and Jeff Beck Stratocasters. Well I tried and tried to set up my new Mayer Strat and just could not get it right and to the point that I liked it or was bonding with it. I was even questioning in my own mind how this guitar gets so many rave reviews! I do not know if it was the frets that were throwing me off or what it was. Well it got within a week of my 30 day return period ending and I was ready to do just that, return it. I then decided to try one last thing and that was take it to a good Tech and Luthier. He kept it overnight and called me the next day saying it was ready. Seems there was a high fret or two so he addressed that issue and did a full set up and intonation. He even set the pickup height for me which I readjusted a little once I got it home.
Now as I am playing through my Dual Showman Reverb and hearing what a great tone the Dipper pickups have and how awesome the neck and action is, I think back at how close I was to giving this absolutely awesome guitar up and how I learned how valuable a good Tech can be. I have not only bonded with this Stratocaster but it has become one of my favorites, if not my favorite. Happy ending:)

That's cool... nothing better than a happy ending 8)
Funny how something like a high fret can totally knock the train right off the tracks... Enjoy your Strat!

Congrats on finding a guitar that you like. Amazing how a good set up can affect the feel of a guitar. Hope you have many happy years together. How about some pics?

I think that is exactly how it's supposed to work. Amazing when that happens.
