Thats awesome looking love a 2 tone sunburst.

Thanks, me too. Definitely the nicest looking Strat I've owned over the years. Even better, though, it was a great deal. Found on local craigslist, in very good good condition (one small ding on the front just above the input jack) with Fender bag: $200 USD.

I'm not against a humbucker in a strat at all and I may do it again. I think I used a wood chisel and cleaned it up with a dremel first time. Eddie inspired a lot of ruined strats back then lol. I only own two Les Pauls and don't ever see wanting or needing more. On the other hand I see several strats in my future.

I agree. I remember the 80s enough to know it was quite popular to route HB's into strats due not only to EVH, but all the hair bands at the time. And when you think how many owned 70s Strats back then it is no wonder 90% of them have been hacked for HB's and Floyd Roses. The necks too were hacked for locking nuts.

But the discussion is really about those that are against conventional HB's in ANY strat as if that is violating some kind of divine law and a sin against the Strat gods and humanity in general lol. No, it is not that bad. Just a matter of what someone wants to do with their own instrument for whatever reasons which when you get down to it, is just a piece of common wood unsanctimoniously mass produced by the gigaton, not exactly anything to worship.

Getting that guitar for $200 is literally a steal. Even though Mexi, those classic 50s are fantastic guitars and with a few upgrades and setup there is no reason they are not right up there with a $2000+ Custom Shop.

Here is a vid of my friend from Austria playing that exact guitar which was used in the recording. The only upgrades are pups, bridge and nut and of course set up for him.

Cool! I'll be honest and cop to not particularly being a Strat man in the first place. I prefer Teles and Pauls. Though for most of the last 25 years I have almost always had one Strat in the stable. There's no reason for anyone with a lot of guitars (and though I don't have anything expensive, "boutique," or otherwise mind-blowing, I do have a fairly hefty number, especially for someone who makes next to nothing playing music, just because I love the variety) to not have a Strat.

Image

That said, this'un, even dead stock, is an upgrade for me over her predecessors. My first was a Korean Squier, followed by a MIM Fender Standard Strat, followed by a USA Peavey Predator, followed by a Squier Strat Deluxe.

If I wasn't already up well over two dozen electrics, I probably should've kept that Strat Deluxe. Despite being a cheapie (I think I bough it used for $75 or maybe $100 USD) Indonesian-made guitar, it had Duncan Designed alnicos, and sounded great. But I sold it to a friend and former bandmate for $150, so, net, this Classic Series 50's was bought for a mere $50 out-of-pocket.

I think what may've happened with this '50's sunburst was that the seller saw "Made In Mexico" on the back of the headstock and maybe thought that meant it was a MIM Standard Strat (which currently street for $500, rather than the '50's price of $800). But frankly, in Gainesville, Florida, there's no telling. This is a small college town with a huge land-grant university, and TONS of bands. The ratio of musos to normals is off the charts, and it's always been a buyer's market when it comes to used gear.

One of the many things I love about living here!

Well you did really really well either way on that classic 50s. However as far as a CL deal typically a mexi standard is around $250 for a "good deal". I got a mexi standard years ago from a pawn shop for $150 and actually was able to use it for pro gigs. They go for a little more on ebay but after ebay fees and paypal fees and shipping etc it is like 20%-25% right off the top..or more. But a classic 50s is in a different breed. You might be right that someone simply did not know what they had and thought it was a standard mexi. Their loss, your gain. I have acquired a few treasures for next to nothing due to that. I also live in Florida now BTW but am a bit further south then you. However I still find people do not always know what they have. They practically give stuff away that others would kill for.

I see your collection is like more along the line of non conventional which I really appreciate. Mine is more like piles and piles of strats and teles with a few oddballs tossed in and then all the customs which are at requests of customers that I usually have a dozen or two hanging around. Although I love collecting and building and finding great deals I am foremost a player so I tend to gravitate towards guitars that I would use myself, which are unique or custom and older strats and teles, or quality reissues. I also do love the older Gibsons but the only ones I have right now is an SG bass and a 69 SG standard in process of a restoration.

Cool. A strat is a strat. Using humbuckers just makes it a fatter sounding strat with more bite.

Thanks Danny. I've been a Fender Strat fan for a long time. ANYTIME I have a chance
to snag a nice strat at a killer price, It's coming home with me.

All it takes is patience and having cash on hand when the right deal comes along. :D

I could happily snaffel the last one.

With so many options it is funny how we ultimately establish a list of boxes to tick.

My main criteria is:-

SSS
Satin Maple Neck
2 post bridge, or hardtail
Block saddles not folded retro/reissue shite (can be retrofitted)
US made - There is a difference though difficult to put your finger on
Passive/traditional 5 position switch electronics (I know 3 position is original but you know what I mean).
I like flush PUP poles
US type string trees, not the nasty retro folded ones.

So, on the whole, exactly my black 1993 American - but with a satin neck and a slightly deeper profile. I might consider other colours (except red/pink/white/or mint). :-)

Now I am wondering when this pict was taken? Looks like Fullerton bodies by the fat rounded curves and not the newer thinner bevels with flat edges like on the American Standard guitars from 1988 onward??? Does anyone know?

I found that pic on another forum posted in 2009. Supposedly pics were taken at the Mexican plant AND the Corona plant as a "Fender product education tour a few years back" by someone who worked for a Fender dealer. I am not 100% sure if that pic was from the Mexi or Corona plant since the poster was not specific but this pic was included as well... As far as a time frame I guess whatever a "few years back" from 2009 means  I would assume in the 2000's but can not verify for certain.
