Here are some of mine which are currently works in progress. Left to right. Early 90s "Hendrix" 68 reissue . 2002 American with vintage noiseless pups and both neck and body stripped and redone in nitro (almost ready for wet sand and polishing). 1985 MIJ 62 reissue. In the back ground is an HSS "partscaster" (and other parts and a 70s Tele body getting a resto). On deck but not pictured is a custom painted early 90s ultra using a USA 70s neck and a few others I do not want to mention yet since they are going to be a surprise lol.

I think it's interesting that those with multiple strats tend to have the same pick up confirmation . In other words all single coil strats or all HSS strats. Most don't mix it up. I understand how this happens and like that it's not just me. I tend to buy HSS and have only one SSS.

I used to do the Humbucker in the Strat thing but I have Les Pauls for that. I run 500k pots to open up the output in my Strat as well.

SSS is what makes a Strat a Strat. If I wanted humbuckers I'd get something else.

I can see the apeal of the flexibility of HSS but after that there are so many "proper" humbucker guitars out there.

Tell that to EVH (granted I don't think he had the greatest tone). I get where you are coming from if you are a Strat "purist" however consider there are many who still love Strats but prefer humbuckers for whatever reasons. I guess that is why Fender created the Blacktop series as well as other HH, HSH and HSS options. I for one built an HHH strat just because I thought it would look cool and be unique. Of course I could have just purchased an HHH Les Paul or SG (or even a J5 HHH tele deluxe) but that is not a strat and would have cost substantially more then putting them in one of the Strats I already had. I did use coil taps which granted is still not quite the same as a pure strat single coil it gives a lot of versatility and of course less hum...but it looks cool too, subjectively speaking...

Also considering even SRV used a strat ("Charley" I believe) that used 3 lipstick pups instead of conventional Strat pups he still sounded great to any Strat purist on the guitar...I guess proving that much of the "tone" starts at the fingers.

I also notice if you ever try to piece together a 70s strat and are searching for a body it seems the majority of the ones left have all been routed for a humbucker by a previous owner. I guess Fender eventually caught on.

I dont think its about being a purest or anything its more about just wanting the classics in their original forms, at least it is for me anymore.

One who wants the classics in their original form pretty much defines a purist. However if people were routing them for humbuckers anyhow it makes it easier to keep them original when Fender does this for us. Of course if someone is a real purist they are only going to buy really old ones or Custom Shop vintage reissues or relics....otherwise other then the body shape you are not getting a classic either way but one with a $@!& ton of "upgrades" and changes (or cheaper parts they just label as "vintage") that Fender has done to stratocasters over the decades not to mention all the other aftermarket upgrades and goodies that many Strat players do, be it to make them sound a certain way, be more reliable, less noisey or just because they prefer the look.

I stopped putting humbuckers in lately but I am one of the guys that routed a 70s strat to be like Eddie in 1980. I had all floyds and humbuckers till about a year or two ago. I just wanted to dig into more my roots Jimi Hendrix Pink Floyd and Deep Purple. I needed singles to get the right sounds through my Marshalls. I use Seymour Duncan Antiquity pickups.

Oh I agree there. For certain styles an SSS Strat is the way to go. Certainly the right thing for Hendrix and Gilmour sounds. However Blackmore has been known to route a 70s Strat or two...

I also notice a custom pick guard on that one. I wonder if he had that made to be different, or if it is covering up some router mess ups lol. I have seen my share where they did not even use a router and it looks so bad I think they used a spork and hammer.

I'm not against a humbucker in a strat at all and I may do it again. I think I used a wood chisel and cleaned it up with a dremel first time. Eddie inspired a lot of ruined strats back then lol. I only own two Les Pauls and don't ever see wanting or needing more. On the other hand I see several strats in my future.
