Hi all, I've got a 1962 Reissue Strat from sometime in the 80's, I'd really like to know when, but the more I look, the less information I get it seems. Serial number on the neck plate is V053593, butt of the neck has a stamp that just says: "JUN", that's it. neck pocket has all sorts of weird stuff on it: A stamp saying "JUL 13 ????" smudged. "62STR" also stamped. A green stamp of 6 numbers I think? Possibly "108040"?, some handwriting that's also unintelligible: "HV"? "16V"? Back of the pickups are black, cloth wiring, there's a circular green sticker in one of the pickup bays that says "C 7-11". Any help? I can post pix too. Thanks!!

I've looked up the serial number, it just gives a range and says: "examine the date stamp on the neck" or something like that...

You could try sending the serial number to Fender, but they really only have data on individual guitars going back to about 1993. Since you got it in the 1980s they may not have anything more than a general spec sheet.

The 3rd and 4th digits from the right on the pots will give you a year, if they have never been swapped.

+1...Pics of the neck end and neck pocket would help too!

The vintage reissues from this time period where pretty consistently dated on the neck end. I almost suspect that it may be a MIJ neck...unless you are the original owner.

Don't know if these will work, I've never done this before, but I really want to get to the bottom of this. I'm not the original owner, but the shop I bought it from is a fairly highly reputable one, specializing in vintage gear. However, if this does happen to be a Japanese neck, they'll be hearing from me...

Also, I checked the pots, the serial numbers have been soldered over...

Pics worked! Could you post a pic of the back or heal side of the neck that goes into the neck pocket. Sorry, should have said that in my earlier post. In fact pics of the necks headstock and the fretboard might give us clues to assist in dating as well.

More pics, please - would be nice to see the whole beast
On that "108040" I got another option; I looked at it the other way around (turned 180°); seems to resemble "0708" plus two last digits too smudged to read...

See where it says June 13? The black smudge beside that is the year.

The serial number definitely doesn't include the date. If your Strat is from the 80's it has to be after 84 as the Fullerton Ri's did not have the model name stamped in the pocket.

Also, that strip of paper should probably be under the neck as a shim not at the end of the neck. It's possible that the paper stuck at the end is obscuring something.
