Hello all. New guy here.

Here's the thing - just got a MIM Strat. Plays great, sounds great, setup fine.

Just one thing: I can see wood when I look down the black truss rod plug. It's to one side, it's circular, and it's about 1/4" across. Looks like someone's drilled out a bit of the truss rod ring when adjusting the truss rod or something.... if that makes sense. Rest of the ring looks fine, a good fit a s o.

I'm a bit OCD about these things... Does this indicate trouble ahead, or is it just a cosmetic thing? Since I find MIM Strats to be a bit hit-and-miss, I really don't feel like returning a great-sounding one for cosmetic reasons (even if I am, of course grumbling about QC, since it's a brand new guitar). I mean, the truss rod ring/plug doesn't actually serve a purpose, does it? The actuall rod is just fine.

Sorry about no pic (yet). Thoughts?

Thank you.

I'm thinking that the pic would really help

Is it possible there is just a piece of leftover wood from your ordinary, properly engineered truss rod assembly?
Anyways, if the truss rod works normally, I'd guess at this point (without the pic) that there's no need to worry.

The truss rod wrench fits just fine, and the actual rod works just fine as well. Not a scratch on the guitar otherwise, and it sounds and plays amazing. The plug seems to sit just fine, as well. Just a bit, err, woody to the side, so to speak...

IMHO, it's just a minor blemish, nothing to worry about.

My guess is someone either tried to fit the wrong wrench in there or didn't engage the trussrod nut properly and scarred the walnut surround.

It you're truly OCD and it bothers you, I would get a stain marker and dab some stain on it to make it invisible.

cheers!

Thanks!

I'll let it slide (the anti-spambot thing where I uploaded the pics required me to type in "live in the now" - that somehow made ironic sense). Love the guitar. I'll just consider it "pre-road worn"

Could use a tuner upgrade, otherwise a beaut. Raised the strings a bit - super low action just doesn't feel right on a Strat IMHO.

Thanks again.

I agree with Lightnin MN & myself in the 1st answer; doesn't seem to be a critical issue.
Anyways, if your OCD keeps lingering, maybe contact the seller with those pics, see what he/she/they has/have to say - I understood it's still under warranty.

Thank you for your replies. I was at the guitar store on other business, and showed a tech a (better) pic of it, and he agreed with you completely.

...aaaaand now it's all academic. Re-strung it and found that the nut was cut wrong for one string (string pops out at the mere mention of a bend after I threw a new set on).

Luck's never been my bag, so I fully expect the replacement to sound like, um, not good, when it arrives
