I have a 2005 Clapton Strat 7 Up Green. What kind of finish is on this guitar? Poly or Nitro?

Polyurethane.

Fender does a batch of nitro-lacquered EC Customs for Wildwood Guitars since a couple of years ago. These guitars lack off the TBX circuit but carry the artist's signature in the rear side of the peghead.

I own a 2001 Clapton Strat in the same color. The offical name is, "Candy Green" (always hated that name).

The Fender release I read calls it 7up Green...

Discontinued.

In 2010 Clapton told Fender to drop Candy Green and Gold Leaf Metallic from their colour chart.

Ironically the last Gold Leaf EC Custom coming out from the CS dates from that year.

I can't speak for the release, only the website, catalog and order model description. Originally, they might have called it that, but legal being legal, well Fender mostlikely changed the name. which makes sense.

I seem to recall that Clapton wanted a color that looked like a "7-Up" can. It's a pretty color.

Here's mine.

It's my oldest guitar, and the one I would never part with. In fact, I'm selling a '76 Strat, and if all goes well, I'm buying one of the new Strat Deluxe Pluses that just came out. I've been checking them out and they are really cool guitars. So far, my favorite personnality card is the, "Blender." It has some really great pickup combonations to select.

Never been a fan of the tough glossy poly finish on the EC. Much prefer the super-thin nitro. They have the more worn look like his own. The last one I ordered I spec'd like that.

I find that nitro has a softer, more organic look to it. I learned the hard way that nitro will "haze" over when it comes in contact with moisture. The guitar is fine, it freaked me out when I saw it happen.

Clapton had exactly the same guitar as yours, he was even pictured proudly cradling that axe in his hands!

It's important to note the particular model was set up for slide and sported a mode switch among other features. Eric had another guitar in the same colour without the mode switch; she was nicknamed the "Night Music" Strat after the famous broadcasting performance EC did with Robert Cray, David Sanborn and Hiram Bullock in late 1989.
