Hey guys so my new strat I bought has a maple fretboard, its a clear coat maple fretboard, Ive never owned a maple neck. I wanna clean it up some, it has some sticky spots on the front and back of the headstock which are also clear coated, just wondering what would be safe? warm water maybe? Ive tried to find stuff but all i see is stuff for the satin un clear coated maple necks. really wanna clean it up and get the sticky stuff off the headstock, feels like left over sticker residue. thanks guys!

Cleaning it depends on what the finish is made from...lacquer, poly, etc. The make and model and pics of what you're trying to clean would help. Maple fingerboards usually need very little cleaning.

I use Murphys Oil Soap to clean my guitars (follow the directions on the label).. safe on all finishes and wood surfaces. A lot of folks are into Naptha... but I don't go there... the Murph-o does the trick. Been using it for years with no problems.

After you finish cleaning the guitar... buff with a dry, soft cloth (I use cotton) and the guitar will also have a nice polish to it 8)

It's never a bad idea to use commercial products specially designed for the job, like e.g. Fender Cleaning&Care products.
Check that the product is nitro safe, if the guitar is nitrolacquered (poly and PU can handle anything).

And then there's the old school way:
Cotton rags for general wiping & toothbrush for that special goo beside the frets, Zippo fluid to aid on the real bad stains. Suitable for all finishes on a maple neck, cheap and readily available everywhere. And, does the job.

hey guys, well im not sure what the clear coat on the neck and headstock are, its not nitro thats for sure, this is a mexican made strat. the actual name is fender mim 60s reverse headstock strat if you wanna check it out, i would post pics but idk how on here. i wanna clean the neck but honestly what i really get off is the stick residue left on the front and back of the headstock, just not sure what i can use thats clear coat safe. so its made in mexico strat, so im not sure what the clear coat is.... i just know the whole neck and headstock is clear coated.

PU is a two pack process, so will be resistant to most things even many solvents. If you want to get the stick off meths or lighter fluid, or gin/vodka shouldn't be a problem.
Don't use acetate (nail varnish remover) as that might damage the finish.

Or acetone. A good ammonia based quick dry gets it, polyurethane, nice and oil free and clean. Small scratches can be polished out with some work, poly is by design abrasion resistant.
